"Intentional Grounding"...

The name of this penalty has always stuck in my craw. It should instead be "illegal grounding". My logic is that a lot of intentionally grounded balls are illegal:
--those thrown into the 5th row of the stands that are obviously ju"st "thrown away". The announcers will even call for the QB to "throw it away before he has done so - suggesting there is inherent intent to do so. And the QB does do so - quite intentionally (but legally)
--those thrown at the feet of a would-be receiver, usually because it's obviously better than if the receiver caught it. Also very obviously intentional, yet legal
So...we should have legal grounding (no penalty) and illegal grounding (penalty).
Related quibble: I don't like when a penalty is said to result in "loss of down". No. Virtually every play results in a "loss of down", but nobody ever says that. Like - "what an awesome 7 yard run he got on 1st down...too bad it resulted in a loss of down, and now it's 2nd down!!!"

Well the difference is the penalty negates any gains made and the down is now lost as compared to completed. The opposing team could take the ball away and decline a penalty that results in a lost down. The language is "intentional"

requires the refs to get out their tea leaves to assign motive

Spiking the ball is so blatantly “intentional” and so on-the-nose “grounding” that it wraps back around and becomes legal again

The rule has changed over time. That's part of what's wrong.
Throwing it into the stands is not grounding. Grounding means just throwing it into the ground to avoid a sack. Back in the day, they would never call a penalty on a QB who throws the ball downfield to avoid a sack. However, now that has changed. And, it's bastardized the term grounding.
In my opinion, the rule should be that a QB who throws the ball past the line of scrimmage should not incur a penalty.

This is a dumb thought

Brady in the second giants SB is the first time I ever saw get called for it due to a wrong route and a pass sailing way downfield to no one. Ended up being a safety and the first score of the game.
