This is a joke. They were thinking USC beat a better team in Michigan than LSU beat in Oklahoma????????? USC had to use trick plays to beat an avg Mich team.

Not necessarily. They did however think USC was the #1 team when all was said and done.

This. Any USC fan that denies the media is on their balls is delusional and that's a fact.

Regarding the previous comment about USC having an easy schedule, I'm not sure I agree with that. The Pac-12 is easily the 2nd best conference in the country. To get to the NC, USC will have to beat a decent Stanford team, a much improved UCLA squad in a rivalry game and of course Oregon TWICE. It's no SEC schedule by any means, but it's still pretty tough.

A decent argument could be made that Michigan>Oklahoma that year. Michigan lost 2 road games by a combined 6 or 7 points. Oklahoma lost 1 game essentially on the road(Kansas City) to Kansas State by 28

I will remind you that SC was also #1 in the coaches poll before the bowls. I will also add that coaches were obligated by contract to vote for LSU after the BCS CG. In fact, if the bCS were not in place, there would have been no split. When #1 wins its bowl against a highly ranked opponent, they have remained #1. History says so.

Also, I am sure you are talking about the pass to lienart for a TD that was desperately needed (as you implied) to beat top 5 Michigan. I will remind you that SC was in the red zone. They also won in by 14 points, 7 more than LSU.

Of course this changes nothing. The nc was split. Shoot, even the BCS called it so for more than a year. AP- USC. Coaches/BCS- LSU

In the final AP before the bowls...

1. USC (42) 11-1
2. LSU (21) 12-1
3. Oklahoma (2) 12-1
4. Michigan 10-2

So USC played #4 and LSU played #3.

Hardly a stretch to say..."this is a joke."

Pollsters watched the games...and while I think OU was a better opponent...the BCS title game was described as a "a four-hour tractor pull of a game that came to a merciful finish."

It wasn't pretty and style points count in the AP - they didn't count in the Coaches.

Regardless, the question wasn't - "which team was better? LSU or USC?"

It was..."would LSU have gotten the Coaches Poll votes w/o being obligated to vote LSU?"

The evidence points to probably not - if style points counted based on LSU losing AP votes after beating Oklahoma. In fact losing the votes of voters who were still voting Oklahoma.

But that's not the system so it really doesn't matter. All LSU had to do was win...style points doesn't matter under the BCS system.

And the Rose Bowl wasn't. UM was #4 by default. The game was rather boring cause NOTHING was really at stake in the grand scheme of things.

If they do, then the AP has no place awarding a national championship to anybody. This is football, not Dancing with the Stars.

What's funny is as H-Town pointed out earlier...there have been numerous split-titles and 2003 isn't even remotely one of the contentious ones...or head-scratchers...both teams had valid claims.

I can't imagine the fury on this site if 2003 had been like 1966 or 1979.

1966 Alabama claims title despite losing Sugar Bowl to Notre Dame - Every authority gave Notre Dame the championship except the Coaches Poll, which still gave its trophy prior to the Bowls. The Coaches Poll rectified their embarrassment by changing their final vote to after the bowls, beginning the next year.

1978 - Split title between Bama and USC despite USC defeating Bama 24-14 in Birmingham during the regular season.

Your new to the polls aren't you? If you don't think style points count in all voting systems w/o a playoff.

Shite, just look at this past weekend with Bama...dum-dum.

"UM was #4 by default"

Maybe, but in all honesty, at that point in the season OU was no better than Michigan.

The harsh reality of it is, the two best teams that year were LSU and USC. USC's triple OT loss was way better on paper than OU getting curb stomped by Kansas St. LSU's loss wasn't pretty either, but at least it was to a team who ended up ranked.

The fans got robbed of the best potential matchup that year, which is a shame, but I still get a good laugh at how many LSU fans are bitter towards USC considering they only played the games in front of them.

I honestly don't get it either. If you look back in this thread, I only brought up 03 when an SC fan commented on the number of anti-USC threads for several years, I brought up the point that a lot of LSU fans are still bitter about the split title. I ain't one of them. We have the crystal ball and that's what counts in my mind.
