re: If you were a football coach, what would be your ideal G5 school?

When did they drop out of the ACC into a G5 conference?
I’m going to break with my fellow Cajuns fans. Coach Napier has shown you can win, get national recognition and potentially P5 looks, but the lack of support from the local community and mid-tier budget in just the Sunbelt has to make a coach who’s able to pick any G5 destination think twice.
UofH is in the middle of great talent, but is physically located in a shithole part of Houston and has to fight UT, A&M, TX Tech, TCU, Baylor and SMU for recruits.
I’m thinking Cincy, UCF or ECU.
Cincy is great because there’s loads of talent in Ohio, and honesty they only have to worry about Ohio State plucking recruits as an in state school. Cincy gets the rest of the pick of the litter, and the school spirit and local support is fantastic. Great facilities.

UCF/USF easily 1/2 in either order. Miami Ohio is another good one. Fresno would be up there as well.

One problem Boone has is the weather. The climate is closer to that of Vermont than surrounding areas of the South because of the elevation. The high there today is in the mid 50's and the low will be in the high 30's. It snows there as early as late October and as late as April. I'd choose ECU over App State solely based on the weather.

Let me also add, that Houston pays Dana Holgorsen $4m a year
Are there any other G5 schools that can/do pay their coach over 3?

There’s no requirement you have to live in Third Ward if you coach there

It’s also been a consistent jump off point to a bigger P5 job. To me UH and UCF are the only options

I’ll throw a few off the radar names in the mix:
Boise State
Arkansas State
Toledo
None of these three seem like they’d be good jobs, but they always seem to have success. Maybe the booster culture sets up nicely. I don’t think these programs are potential power conference programs, but they seem to be good stepping stones.
Hugh Freeze, Gus Malzahn and Brian Harsin all came through Arkansas State - 3 SEC coaches from one job.

San Diego State
Beautiful weather, beautiful people, very solid football history, cool uniforms, fertile recruiting ground, 35k enrollment, and a new stadium being built. I think they have a decent sized fanbase as well.

Dana lives in montrose
The third ward is slowly being gentrified. The new med center expansion will be a PED shot to that part of town

East Carolina. Good football culture and they've had success in the past. I think their stadium is almost 60k. Easy admission standards so you can bring in some questionable character guys to win.
I lived in Greenville and worked a contract a PITT memorial in the summer of 2010. I was absolutely shocked at the amount of community support ECU has. Couldn’t really tell the difference between it and an SEC school.

I know the P6 bit is a joke, but if the FBS split happens, I’d like to see a lot of American and a few MW teams go with the P5.
ECU and its fans are more deserving of playing at the top level than Duke.

UCF or cinci are the only other ones that would come close. Realistically those are the three best G5 jobs
The fun belt is littered with schools where the right coach could win: Troy/ark state/ULL/coastal all have shown they can build good programs. Georgia southern and app have been solid programs for ages
Georgia state is a “sleeping giant”

Yes but the question is where would you wanna go
I’d prefer to make the most money I could and be at a stepping stone to a P5 school
Say you make $4m a year at either school, if you do very well, you’re either getting a nice raise by the school to stay there, or a nice raise by a P5 school.

They are all stepping stones if you are good enough.
The 4 million at Houston was given to a proven p-5 coach. That’s not happening to your average stepping stone coach.
I rather make less money at somewhere I know I can win than go to UCF or Houston where the fans have high expectations. Being consistently good does run the risk being a skip holtz and stuck at la tech.

If I wanted to build a program I would go to New Mexico. You are in MWC, you have a major metro, you are close to West Texas, have 2 natural rivals in NMSU and Tech.
If I was going to take the best job of them considering weather, job, players, facilities, area, quality of life, etc., it is UCF easily.

UCF gave Heupel 3 Mil before he left
I’ll take that too
I would say Fickel and Dykes also at SMU and Cinci (both also made 3mil) but they had previous P5 HC experience

1. None of these are G5
2.
Because they don’t have an endless recruiting budget.

Prolly Vandy. Great city and low expectations.

Wow. I did not know that Vandy had dropped out of the SEC and is now a G5.
