They made the ruling because of Tiger's statement after the round. At least that's what they said in their official statement.

But what the frick does that matter?

The rule allows for him to drop within "Close Proximity" which the rules committee originally ruled his drop was within.

All of a sudden "Close Proximity" changes due to a statement?

Tiger has a tendency to attract the douches that are casual sports fans and would otherwise view the Masters as akin to Wimbledon in terms of their interest. They are more than wiling to bend the rules for the sake of their own entertainment. For all the discussion of how he's done so much for the sport, it will actually be great for the game when Tiger finally fades out of major tournament contention.

Not in that situation. The rule clearly states it must be placed as close as possible to the previous spot. Tiger admitted he placed it farther back to benefit him, thus breaking the rule.

That tends to happen when you're one of the most famous athletes in the world.

yes.

Tiger is not good enough to hit flag sticks on command. anybody that believes that two feet allowed tiger to hit a better shot and miss the flag stick is not being honest.

Tiger was mad during the post round interview and being a sarcastic smart arse. He airmails more greens with wedge in his hand than he hits flagsticks.

Yes it was a violation and he was penalized. Geez.

Yes guys but we need to ignore that, this is setting a precedent for the game of golf..

They told him he was fine prior to the end of his round

Again guys the integrity.

I think my biggest problem with the whole damn thing is everyone preaching about how this is what makes golf great and he should DQ himself to keep integrity in golf.

COMPLETELY ignoring the fact that exact situations like this have probably happened thousands of times in Major Championships over the last 50 years, but guess what, they weren't caught on camera so those are ok. If you really think that most professional golfers have never done anything that maybe didnt completely follow the PGA rulebook you are lying to yourself.

Tiger Woods knows that every single thing he does on a golf course is going to be televised with millions watching, especially in a Major Championship. Do you really think he knowingly did something that would risk him being disqualified from the Masters to gain a 5 foot advantage??

And now the "self-titled golf aficionado on high horse" enters the arena.

Great.

Absolutely, hero worshipers love to fuel that. I just don't agree that he's bigger than the sport, which is typically the thesis of those who only tune in when he's in the hunt. It's an individual sport, but I'd rather those guys just stick to following the NBA and have the mindless Lebron and Kobe pissing matches.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, I don't believe the DQ issue would be relevant if his two stroke penalty would have been assessed before finishing his round. Isn't the DQ issue because he signed an incorrect score card?

Right. So why is everyone's panties in a wad. It's not like Tiger put the new rule in this morning. I don't see how this damages the integrity of the game.

Because Tiger is the first to benefit from the rule change made more than a year ago. Yet he's getting special treatment in their mind.
