If Jordan really did get suspended for gambling, who made the decision?

David Stern? Or was there some outside pressure from law enforcement?

Why would David Stern choose to suspend his biggest star? I figure there had to be some type of outside influence (Feds possibly) who were ready to nab MJ based on evidence. Consequently, Stern and law officials came to an agreement for him to "retire" (suspension).

I find the conspiracy theory of Jordan being suspended for gambling to be absurd. It doesn’t even make sense.

It makes perfect sense.

I think people speculate he was gambling on NBA games and even his own team. He wouldn’t be suspended for playing blackjack. With how people viewed Pete Rose - especially 23 years ago - How is the notion itself absurd?

People also say his dad was killed over gambling.

Maybe to keep him from getting the Pete Rose treatment.

Sam Smith: “It’s not possible to keep a secret in the NBA. So this notion that somehow the NBA suspended the greatest player in the history of the NBA — forced him out of the game — and now over 20 years later, nobody still knows about this, is just ludicrous.”

That's kind of how I feel. You would have heard something by now with legit sources. Too many people would have known what was going on and talked by now to get $$$$

It’s like people completely forget that his dad was murdered and 2 months later he announces he is retiring because he lost his desire to play basketball after his dad was killed.

That’s the whole reason he played baseball. He said himself it was to honor his dad’s dream of him playing baseball.

If he was suspended for gambling and pretended to retire, why in the frick would he go play minor league baseball in Alabama?

I agree.

MJ left the sport because he was scared of a basketball team.

CLEARLY Lebron > MJ

He ended up missing 147 games of regular season basketball. That would have been an odd number of games for a suspension. In terms of the calendar, it was 17 months from October 1993 to March 95. Again, a strange number to set for a suspension.

You think law enforcement would be satisfied with a retirement? If he was doing something against the law and they could prove it they would have arrested him. The idea that the FBI would stop an investigation because he retired is laughable.

I have a hard time believing this conspiracy theory because if it were true, then I would highly doubt that the league would've allowed Jordan to become a partial owner and front office guy for the Wizards...and eventually have his own team with Charlotte.

Listen to the podcast What Really Happened. The episode is No Thank You Sam and goes into great detail on the Jordan retirement. Good podcast.

Only thing I find curious was when he said he could possibly return "If David Stern will have me back," in his retirement speech. Why would he have to say that if he were just leaving of his own volition?

I would guess that's because he was returning right before the playoffs started. It wasn't like he was coming back at the beginning of the season.
