re: If Joe Brady becomes the Falcons HC, is Mac Jones his first draft pick?

His 5* wide receivers are often times wide open and he has a clean pocket to throw in.
He literally has zero 5* WRs on the field with him.
4-star Jaylen Waddle (only played in 4 games)
4-star WR Devonta Smith
4-star John Metchie
3-star Slade Bolden

The Bama quarterback has thrown an uncatchable ball on just 18.7% of his 10-plus-yard passes, which is over four percentage points better than any other Power 5 quarterback since we began charting QB accuracy and ball location back in 2018.
Further cementing his place at the top is Jones' ability to limit negative plays. One of the most important and stable statistical measures to quarterback play is negatively graded throw rate, and there hasn’t been a better quarterback in that metric this season than the Crimson Tide passer. Not only does he lead all quarterbacks in negatively graded play rate this year, but he also leads every single QB of the PFF College era.
And all of this success isn’t entirely because he has open throw after open throw. He's actually thrown into a tight window on 15.2% of his passes this season, a rate that is about four percentage points higher than Tagovailoa's last season and is nearly double that of Justin Fields (8.3%) this year. Oh, and Jones has also been the most accurate passer on tight-window throws this season — by a large margin.

Jones' skill-set is the closest to Burrow's that Brady could find in the 2021 draft.
Spoken like someone who has never seen either play. The comparison just isn't there. Burrow was much more mobile, able to throw at different angles, and just played smoother. Burrow far more adept at RPO and broken plays while Jones is a damned statue in the pocket making a living off of 5 seconds to throw off of play actions.
That's not to say Jones is or won't be a good player, but pump the brakes on the Burrow comparisons. Neither Jones nor Trask hold a candle to what Burrow did in 2019.

I read the quote you responded to
They want Brady for ONE reason - the Brady/Burrow offense
If the GM doesn't let Brady pick the QB for that offense, the GM is a fricking idiot

He is no where close to the mobility Joe or evasiveness in the pocket Joe has.

The Crimson Tide signal-caller also fared well in unfavorable situations. Play under pressure is volatile, but Jones has shown he’s not a complete statue; he has converted just 11% of his pressured dropbacks into sacks, the second-best rate in the SEC, while earning the fourth-best pressured passing grade in his conference.

It's not so much the recievers but the system. Everyone is wide open, he jas never really had to throw anyone open. That's where the issue js.

Have followed Burrow since the Ohio high school playoffs. Have watched every game Jones played at Bama.
They are cut from the same cloth. Their skill sets are perfect for that offense. Stick them in a Pro-style and they wouldn't do so well.

That's blatantly false
quote:
Joe Burrow and the LSU Tigers shocked the college football landscape in 2019 when the young quarterback exploded with one of the most prominent breakouts in recent memory. Burrow skyrocketed up draft boards before being selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the No. 1 pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, while his passing game coordinator, Joe Brady, landed the Carolina Panthers‘ offensive coordinator job after making his name known as one of the bright young minds in the game.
quote:
Mac Jones and the Alabama Crimson Tide defied the odds and put together an even more impressive season than the one we saw from Joe Burrow and the LSU Tigers in 2019.
They are fresh off handling the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the 2020-21 College Football Playoff semifinal and are breaking many of the records set by Burrow and the Tigers.
Jones has now earned the highest PFF grade we have ever recorded at his position (95.5), topping the mark set by Burrow in 2019. Meanwhile, his No. 1 wide receiver, DeVonta Smith, has done the same at his position (94.0).
That starring pair, along with several others in vital supporting roles, generated a successful pass rate of 60% this season, breaking the previous record set by LSU in 2019 by a full percentage point.
Imagine if Jones had the luxury of playing Northwestern State, Utah State, Vanderbilt and Georgia Southern.

I don't see Mac Jones getting picked that high. He has made some excellent throws though at times this year that are pro level. Sure he has very talented receivers there's no doubt about that and some of the plays that are dialed up are really good at getting guys in space and they in turn do damage in the YAC. but there's no question that he has done a lot better than I think a lot of people would have thought at the beginning of this season.

There is a lot of distance between Joe Butrow and “not a complete statue”
He can get the ball out fast. Great. Not that impressive when you’re WR are open.
Hunk about the game winner against Texas, the scramble drill against UGA, or that first but throw in the Championship game that got called back.
Can Jones do that?
Never has
Can he take off and run?
He has 3 yards on the season.

Yeah, I'm w/Maximus here. PFF is just a site for stat/SABR nerds who don't know the first thing about football.
Mac is not starter caliber in the NFL IMO.

I've literally posted those numbers twice. They aren't wide open all the time. He's the best tight window passer in the country.

He's had several scrambles for crucial first down conversions all season.
Again, you only see what you want to see.

This strawman from Bama fans is so tiresome. Jones will play all of 1 more game against P5 teams and that game was against Missouri or Kentucky take your pick but let’s imagine what Burrow could have done playing a bunch of teams missing players due to Covid

I guess we'll just ignore what he's done on the field then.

So 13 Power Five teams. Hmmm.
That must be a record.
