If a record of 126–114, 6-5 playoff record, and a Super Bowl can get ole Dick in. Payton’s 161–97 record, 9-8 playoff record and a Super Bowl should be a shoe in. I personally don’t think Vermeil deserves to be in, but here we are. Carrol, Payton, Tomlin, McCarthy, Arians, Coughlin, and Andy Reid will walk right on in.

Ehh, he took a bad franchise to the Super Bowl, retired for 15 years and won the Super Bowl with another bad franchise. He probably deserves it.

Vermeil turned around three franchises that had been struggling. Payton turned around one but you can argue he wasted 15 great years with a Hall of Fame quarterback. Mike McCarthy gets more shite for wasting Favre and Rodgers but Payton did pretty much the same thing.

Well when CSP takes another franchise to a Super Bowl and a 3rd that was awful as the 2 he took to a Super Bowl to a division championship you may have an argument.

Eh, maybe. Johnson didn’t get in until 2 years ago, Flores didn’t get in until last year, and Shanahan is still waiting.

It's kind of tough to figure what the criteria is for some coaches, other than maybe likeability.

I think Dungy and Madden are the only SB era coaches with only one SB appearance.

Why is Marv Levy in the HOF but Dan Reeves isn’t?

HOF for professional sports don’t mean the same thing they did 40 years ago.

Vermeil spent copious amounts of time gabbing on TV and shedding tears to supplement his coaching record. Sean's got a long way to go to catch up with that.

Vermeil kicked arse as a coach. Like Andy Reid, an offensive genius

Dungy deserves some credit for the 2002 Bucs. (Perhaps more credit than Gruden?)

And Madden’s winning percentage, more so than the Super Bowl, is what got him in.

This. Payton needs either a lengthy TV career or to win another SB.

With all the crying his speech might be the longest of all time or short out the microphone and start a fire.

Highest winning % among coaches.

In all 10 seasons under Madden, the Raiders finished with a winning record.

Those 10 years without having a losing record were part of a 16-year streak of consecutive winning seasons that ran from 1965 to 1980, which is tied with the 49ers' run between 1983 and 1998 as the third best of all time.

The Raiders were the winningest sports franchise for a long time. Madden was 112 wins and 39 losses in 10 years. .759% above Lombardi and Belichick.

That's stupid. His numbers still destroy Vermeil. Payton took over a 3 win team and immediately took them to the NFC championship game in year 1. All while being his only HC job needed. He can't help he was so good he never had to leave.

He is among the most winningest coaches of his era. If not for Bounty Gate he would be even more impressive. Missed season, draft picks, and it took him a little while to get back on track after that nonsense. I believe since he became a HC in 06 until that suspension around 11-12, nobody in the NFL had more wins except maybe Belichick. And I also believe over the past 5 years the only coach with more wins is Reid? He is easily a HOF. Anything else is just lagniappe.

When he took over, Pittsburgh was pretty mediocre - out of Knoll’s last seven seasons, they had winning records in two. He made them a consistent winner overnight. Two Super Bowl trips and one win is pretty good.

Wasn't he also the youngest head coach go make a Super Bowl at the time? 38 in 1995.

According to his Wiki page, he was also the 2nd coach to take his team to playoffs each of his first 6 seasons.

I'd imagine he was also Top 15 in wins when he retired (149 regular season wins). Nine of the 22 coaches currently in front of him were active after he retired.

Vermeil's contribution to the HOF is that he introduced the term burnout to NFL coaching.
