I would say under 1% of any American age group could name 100 premier league players

My bad. I meant hundreds of players overall. Premier, La liga, bundeslifa mls, etc.
It’s more than you think. Between kids playing lots of soccer at a young age, playing madden and fifa more than the other sports games, and watching YouTube clips instead of entire games there is a significantly increased awareness. Again I realize my kids having more friends who are Hispanic in South Florida is likely different than kids in Baton Rouge.
But nationally the demographics ARE changing and soccer is often cited as the 3rd most popular sport in the young crowd surpassing baseball.

I have some new neighbors from Europe. Their kids are in the back yard almost every day kicking the soccer ball. Hours a week just kicking the ball around. Until they accidentally kick it over the fence into my yard and have to wait for me to get home to throw them back their ball. Just like a basketball player doesn't get incredible handles without hours and hours of practice until they are one with the ball, same with soccer. With so many other distractions available to kids today I don't really see many US kids putting the hours into getting better on their own time.

I agree w/ this but we definitely could get a super athletic G league or nba reject 6-6 205 to play goal keeper with training and be ready for 2030

I'll never know much about soccer, but aside from speed and agility, great players think and can make up plays on a dime. A lot of that comes from years of playing and thinking about the game, trying new things on the fly, etc...
50 years ago I was told soccer would take over every professional sport in the US. Still not there, but the way some pro leagues are treating their fans, it may be less time now due to apathy.
