I said last year he was one of the best 5 position players in baseball and one ignorant soul actually chided me and made fun of the notion. For me there is no doubt and I'd say I might even be shortchanging him there. Top 3 might be closer to the truth.

People argued he should have focused more on driving in runners with RISP, instead of just getting on base.

I don't agree with the argument.

That argument still doesn't make sense because Votto has a career .333 batting average and 1.073 OPS with runners in scoring position. The main reason why Votto has low RBI totals is that the guys who have hit in front of him such as Zack Cozart, Drew Stubbs, Billy Hamilton and Jose Peraza have career OBPs barely above .300. It's hard to drive in runs when nobody in front of you is getting on.

Somehow he has 123 RBI in his last 162 games.

Or people are giving him more pitches to hit now because Duvall and Schebler are producing behind him. There was a few year period there where pitchers would just put him on first because everyone behind him sucked.

his swing% is up on pitches in the zone. He's simply swinging more at these pitches. Though i agree his protection is better this year

Zack Cozart got good and 41 of the RBI's came from himself. Those two things add up.

That power spike is probably his biggest since 2010 (MVP season).

He's probably two or three more years away from being a HOFer. That's pretty great. His peak is .1 WAR off of HOF level, he'll probably take care of that this year, and is only 14 WAR from reaching the career threshold

He's pretty great

To be great as a 1B with average fielding you have to be an insanely great hitter not just an excellent one IMO

I didn't realize his career avg is .312 until I looked it up for another thread.

Like someone else said people who know baseball know how good he is but he doesn't get 51 WAR in 10.5 years publicity.

odd that he is ofer in the AllStar game but he usually doesn't start so he faces great closers a lotI bet
