How good could Hawaii be if they kept all their in state talent?

We know about the QBs that made their way to the SEC. Seems like every Pac 12 team has a few contributors from the Aloha state.

Are we talking Boise/UCF level where they could knock off big names or would they be more of a Fresno State where they just make bowls?

Maybe as good as the team that went 12-1 back in 2007 under Colt Brennan and June Jones(Chuck and Duck!) or what they accomplished in the Timmy Chang years, interesting to speculate for sure

I would think they'd be much better than that 12-1 team. That squad played a SOFT schedule even for the WAC. Boise and Fresno were the only two schools they beat w/winning records that year.

Defensive players like Manti Te'o, Manase Hungalu, and Hercules Mata’afa would make a HUGE difference for them.

If that 2007 team would’ve had some good interior lineman then watch out

An all-Samoan team could do some heavy damage although they'd likely lack depth at the skill positions.

This

Hawaii HS football is baaaaaad

We just remember their good players because they often have different names and look a bit different than the typical player

But even if Hawaii landed every stud produced in Hawaii, they'd be mediocre

Wasn't Hawaii actually discussing shutting down its football program recently?

If we expand "in state" to include Samoa, Tonga and Aussie kickers/punters, you've got a squad.

It's been discussed. They've had serious financial issues

The travel budget has to be killing them.

Could only imagine how much this is! It's what? 5 hours to California?

Hawaii could turn itself into a powerhouse with in-state recruiting and California/West Coast.

They don't want to make the investment though. Jones (an alumn) got so frustrated he went to SMU.

The travel costs are unbearable and they don't belong to a P5 conference. They used to get teams like Notre Dame and Michigan State to travel there, but those days are long gone. Their attendance isn't as great as you'd expect and no P5 money. It's like a good MAC program with very high travel costs. Plus if you have P5 talent you have better opportunity to get better on the mainland.

I know all too well how bad attendance is down here in Hawaii. I've been to a couple of Hawaii games during my time here, and the attendance is freaking terrible. There were more people at the high school state championship games.

I gotta imagine its even worse in other sports where there are more games and travel is much more frequent.
