How funny is the Thunder cap situation?

They traded Harden a year early, just to eventually avoid the cap tax, breaking up a Harden/KD/Russ/Ibaka core all around 25 or younger.
And now they’re about to face the largest salary cap tax in NBA history after the PG deal. I mean, signing PG was the right thing to do and a good move for them - but it’s very ironic that a potential dynasty was upended because of cap fear only for the same franchise to set a cap record a few years later for a non contender.
They’ll have options after they shed Melo next year. It may all work out. But the whole situation is just kind of funny

Melo is laughing all the way to the bank.

Choosing Ibaka over Harden is crazy in hindsight. Little did they know the small ball revolution was coming

Think Tim Kawakami made a good point tonight.
Yes, the Harden move was dumb, but just because they did it once, doesn't mean they should do it again.

Yeah and they are clearly unloading Carmelo to ease that tax bill some

Melo-$27 mill this yr
Steven Adams- $26 mill/yr
Roberson -$10 mill/yr
Grant-$9 mill/yr

They have an ownership group like most other franchises with some extremely wealthy people in it

George Kaiser is a multi billionaire. I think the MidFirst guy might be too. The group is a lot more than just McClendon’s estate and Clay Bennett
Anthony’s deal is up after this year and the cap is supposed to go up quite a bit

they aren't going to keep paying 250-300 a year in payroll for very long.

Kendrick fricking Perkins was the guy who fricked up that team
they thought the Dwight Howard-led Magic was their future finals opponents so they believed Perkins was the key

The funny thing is Paul George is basically Carmelo with a better 3pt shot

George is a much better defender

Uh, no. They got beat up in the playoffs inside by the Lakers and had no toughness. That's why they got Perkins. That, and the Grizzlies of that period. Those were fun playoff series.
