How about one simple rule for at-large eligibility

If you finish the year with 0 wins against teams ranked in the final top 25 poll, you're ineligible for an at-large spot.

That's it. It's simple and applies to everyone across the board. 0 wins against teams in the final top 25, you shouldn't be ineligible for an at large spot, your final record or ranking be damned.

Make this an official written rule, eliminates all the "debate" and teams with playoff aspirations would adjust their scheduling upwards accordingly.

Who determines who the top 25 teams are? There’s several different polls and they will disagree on who is top 25.

The final CFP poll.

They produce the rankings exactly the same way they do today.

This year if you applied the rule it would have DQ'd Indiana, and SMU as they didn't have a single win against any team in final top 25.

Having a committee determine the top 25 is pretty flawed as it is. What happens when some team is 11-1 and they have wins over #26 and #27? Then you have arguments over whether those teams should be #24 and #25.

There’s over 120 FCS teams and 65 or so P4. With 12 game schedules, you’ll never have enough balance within the opponents to accurately compare teams across conferences. Hell, with 16 team conferences you have trouble comparing teams in the same conference because schedules are so different.

Too bad. You had two chances to beat one team

Even better! You shouldn't be able to qualify for the playoffs on beating exclusively cupcakes. Beating 1 team with a pulse should be mandatory.

How about no preseason rankings. There’s no reason to guess who will be good except it makes for hours of tv coverage and internet clicks.

Teams can’t control what happens after they play somebody

Rankings are stupid, look at Indiana’s record. Ohio st got credit for beating a top 5 team.
Using SOS more to decide who gets in would help.

So Notre Dame qualifies with the win over Army? Seems legit.

I agree with this. It’s a low bar. Use whatever poll you want. Any power 5 contender should be able to accomplish this easily.

this is kind of true. I think Texas is one of the best teams in the country but we may get the clearest example of 12 being too many if the blowouts continue and UGA playing Texas one more time.

Theoretically, UGA would have to beat Texas three times to win the ultimate prize.

Which is ultimately based on someone’s opinion somewhere.

Even if you factor in computer rankings at some point you put subjectivity into it if you use SOS in the data.

I’ll say it again

These threads are so dumb

The first team out was Bama. Yes, the team that lost by 21 to a 6 loss team and also lost to Vandy

So why does Indiana’s 10 pt loss to top 5 notre dame make them a “fraud”?

It’s a 12 team playoff. The last few teams in aren’t going to be great

They scheduled Michigan. How were they supposed to know they would suck?

SOS has to be given more weight. We all know battle tested teams do better in the postseason. If marquee teams play each other during the regular season it will be much easier to seed them.

Schedules are set years in advance. Schools can't really control this.

Indiana played and beat both Michigan and Washington, this season, both of which were in the national title game last year.

The point of the playoff is not to get the 12 "best" teams. It's to avoid a situation like 2023 FSU where one or the top 5 schools got left out.

A team could have scheduled the following teams this year

LSU
Michigan
Oklahoma
FSU
Auburn
Florida
Washington
USC

and not had a ranked win there….

Those are conference games so they don’t have a say.

Indiana’s non conference schedule:
Florida International
Western Illinois
UCLA
Charlotte
