The College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts may ditch their mascot, the Crusader, because it could be offensive to Muslims.

The mascot has been an integral part of the Holy Cross community for over a century, but college president Rev. Philip L. Boroughs has his concerns. President Boroughs established a working group which has asked, “In what ways do you think the Crusader moniker and mascot are appropriate, or inappropriate, representations of the College, given our mission, values and identity?”

quote:

“The Crusader name is an undeniable part of the College of the Holy Cross’ history,” the school told the Herald in a statement. “At the same time, as an institution of higher learning, we acknowledge our responsibility to thoughtfully examine the sensitivities and implications this name may bear.”

I went to Brother Martin. I hope we put Crusaders on every uniform that currently doesn't have it.

Holy Cross Crusader mascot is worth saving

A Holy Cross alum makes an intelligent, well-reasoned defense of the Crusader mascot.

A private Catholic school isn't changing their name.

From Holy Cross alum's defense:

quote:

Notre Dame’s Leprechaun is a belligerent ethnic stereotype; Seton Hall’s Pirate is surely not an admirable figure. But the name “Crusaders” connects Holy Cross to Catholicism’s past: to a time when Christians were embattled and surrounded, and fought back. Both the ideals and the failings of that era should humble us. The healthy response to the history of the Crusades is to keep its memory alive, not bury it. We are more than our traditions and our history, but knowing where you come from is the first step to wisdom.

Modern critics of the Crusades tend to make the fundamental error of analyzing medieval people through the lens of the modern world. We live in a world where Western civilization has thoroughly dominated non-Western peoples militarily, economically, and technologically for the past four to five centuries, so naturally we think in those terms. The Crusades are thus denounced as an example of European imperialism and colonialism.

You could replace things regarding the Crusades with the Civil War here, which is the argument many have made when it comes to the monuments/street names as well as college mascots.

Edit: Specifically the things in bold.

I want you to read this COMPLETE article and tell me anywhere in it beside the click-bait headline where it says that the mascot is being eliminated.

Get a life, people. At least you can get offended over things that are actually happening.

My high school did this in 2001. Its a private nondenominational Christian school who thought it was offensive to Muslims. They went from a great logo mascot, Peoria Christian Crusaders to the Chargers (a horse) .
