Arizona State announced Herm Edwards as its next coach Sunday. Doug Haller of The Arizona Republic first reported that the school would announce the decision Monday.

Edwards, 63, has not coached at the college level since 1989 when he was the defensive backs coach at San Jose State. He has not coached at any level since 2008, when he finished 2-14 in his eighth year as an NFL head coach, his third and final year with the Kansas City Chiefs. Edwards has been an ESPN analyst since 2009.

Arizona State fired coach Todd Graham Nov. 26 after six seasons in Tempe. Graham, who was under contract through 2021, will still coach the team in the Hyundai Sun Bowl Dec. 29. His estimated buyout is $12 million.

It was reported last week that Edwards was going to take over for the Sun Devils pending an interview with Arizona State president Michael Crow. Haller adds that Edwards will be Arizona's State's first African American head football coach.

In his eight seasons as an NFL head coach, Edwards went 54-74. He spent his first five years with the New York Jets where he went 39-41 and 2-3 in the postseason. In his three years with Kansas City he made the playoffs just once and went 6-26 in his last two seasons.

Sometimes the Arizona schools make what you think will be a decent hire and it turns dumpster fire. Pretty sure this will be straight dumpster fire.

As I said in the thread on the CC board yesterday, I don't understand this hire at all. Hiring a guy that coached pros all but a few years in his life, that being when he first started coaching and he was the San Jose State defensive backs coach from 87-89. He has little to no experience recruiting. No recruiting ties, hasn't coached in 10 years and is 63 years old.

Such a strange hire.

This sounds like a terrible idea for Arizona State, of all schools, to test out.

So they hire a coach who:

Hasn't coached in College since the 1980's

That college coaching career spanned only 2 years

Has no modern recruiting experience

Hasn't coached at all in almost 10 years

Has a losing record as a Head Coach

Is over 60

Good stuff.

That second paragraph reads like consulting firms web page. Just full of office buzzwords that have zero depth what so ever.

Could have just “Herm is bringing a synergistic attitude to our team. He will be looping everyone in to bounce ideas off of and to share his wealth of knowledge. We did a deep dive in this coaching search and after a few heart to hearts we know we made the best decision.”

You've been around for 5 years and don't realize the proper board to post this news?

I'm guessing this is just a big to the cluckster and his rules. You go boy!

AKA, we've been largely irrelevant in college football, so we are going to do and say some fancy shite to get noticed.

While you make some good points. Let's not act like teams don't hire coaches who have a losing record (Looking at you LSU). Also, he has been around high school prospects during the All American & Under Armor games. He's also the same age as Les Miles.

THIS. All of this. I know people who deal with consulting firms. This is the type of bullshite that they spend 8 hours a day concocting. And the "consultants" are so out of touch with reality that none of their shite works in a practical world....it is all "textbook babble" that they learned in a theory class in college.

So apparently Herm has no clue the mascot of the school he just became the head coach of.
