While the NFL came out of Thursday’s head-to-head unscathed, the NBA and NHL were not so fortunate. Heat-Celtics Game 2 declined 21% from Raptors-Bucks last year, a Friday night game on TNT that aired in a later timeslot (4.39M).

Miami’s win delivered the smallest conference final audience 2007 (Jazz-Spurs Game 2: 3.42M) and the third-smallest since ESPN/ABC acquired NBA rights in the 2002-03 season — with the obvious caveat that no previous conference final games aired opposite the NFL.

Game 2 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat averaged 3.479 million viewers on Thursday night on ESPN. Per data from Sports Media Watch, which has a useful table of every conference final game viewership since 2000, Thursday was the least watched Eastern Conference Finals game since Game 4 between the Nets and Pistons in 2003, a series that ended in a sweep. Game 2 of the 2007 Western Conference Finals between the Jazz and Spurs was also slightly lower than last night’s Celtics-Heat game.

A game that was not even played in primetime got bad ratings compared to a bunch of other games, literally all of which were played in primetime?

And ignore that the second half was opposite an NFL game. That has literally never happened either.

Keep grasping, MAGAtards.

Were there boycotts going on then too?

Also it was up against an NFL game as well as Miami vs Boston not having the same allure to it as Toronto vs Boston or Milwaukee vs Boston.

God yall try so hard to act like people outside your bubble actually care

Also there's this

Further proof that superstars and not the size of the team’s markets are the driving factor for NBA ratings. I bet ratings wouldn’t be anywhere near as shitty if Giannis and the Bucks were playing the Celtics instead of the Heat. No offense to Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo and Goran Dragic but nobody cares about watching those dudes play unless they’re a fan of the Heat or are a diehard NBA fan.

I hope their ratings tank too but this is kind of an important detail to factor in
