I absolutely despise Coach K and Duke, but I think he's the greatest coach ever, and the Championship didn't change my opinion. Since 1988, Duke has been a top 3-seed every year except 3 times. That means for over 25 years, Duke has been a top 10 team. Every single season, almost without fail.
In today's more competitive climate, and yes, college basketball is more competitive now than it was in Wooden's day, when only about two schools could recruit nationally (Notre Dame being the other), the fact that Duke is almost always one of the best teams in the country is a testament to Coach K.
Now, he's a sanctimonious, hypocritical jackass. But that doesn't mean he's not a great coach. He learned it from his piece of crap mentor, Bobby Knight. Who was also a great coach.

I will never forget the feeling of being slumped in my seat, looking up, seeing the confetti fall, the Duke players celebrating, the Duke fans going nuts, fireworks going off. It was sickening.
Whoa, you were at the game?

That's why I could never go to a championship game involving one of my teams. The ride home would be awful.

I ended up going, yeah.
I was sitting on my couch on Sunday and my buddy called me. 20 minutes later, I'm in a car driving from Chicago to Indianapolis. Stayed two nights and just got back to Chicago today.

Why was Knight a piece of crap? Because he had a temper? I think the fact that all but TWO players in his entire tenure at Indiana graduated is far more important than him having a foul mouth. Would you rather some fake "aw shucks" persona where the players are a bunch of punks who drop out of school as soon as the season is over?

Bobby Knight physical attacked and assaulted a fan. He was arrested, tried, and convicted. He never went to jail, mainly by avoiding Puerto Rico. Yes, Bobby Knight wqas a piece of shite. He was a bully, a jerk, and an arrogant a-hole who threw his career away because of his insane temper and need to have everyone genuflect before his greatness. Coach K is not in his class of thuggery and assholishness, but he did pick up a few pointers.
Bobby Knight is one of the worst people to ever coach in college sports. I loathe him and everything he stands for.

I mean he has/had serious anger issues and probably some underlying psychological issues. I think he should get credit though for making sure all his kids graduated and stayed out of trouble, which he excelled at. Maybe he's a crappy person, but he oversaw an admirable program imo.

To call whatever Knight has going on up there as "a temper" is an understatement to the umpteenth degree. The man is borderline insane.

That's a very objective and solid post.

I agree that Bobby Knight is a hypocritical jackass and I usually root for former coaches from Army, which both Bobby Knight and Coach K were. My Grandfather was the head coach of Army 8 years before Knight.
Anyway, great objective post, regardless of what you think of K's personality.
