Kobe was the 13th pick in the draft. The hype was nowhere near Lebron

Kobe was pre internet for the most part. And he went late because of back end stuff where he refused to go to some of the teams above him. And 1996 is arguably one of the best draft classes ever

Wayne Gretzky before him too.

Eta: also ovechkin. Being in Russia makes it less obvious but he was a well known talent for a while pre NHL and he has absolutely delivered

Serena had 5 grand slam titles (singles, doubles, mixed) before she turned 18. She was quite hyped and has lived up to it.

Griffey and Sid Crosby.

I'm a Penguins fan. I better say that.

Yep. He's gonna end up a top-3 top-4 player of all time when he's done. He's pretty much there now. The best player of his generation and it ain't close.

As.much as it pains me to say as a Pens fan, this is correct.

Ovi has earned my respect. I used to loathe the guy. But he might be the best pure scorer in NHL history, and I'm including Gretzky and Mario in that.

Messi, Ronaldo, and Rooney are just 3 examples of recent players who were household names in Europe as teens and lived up to the hype.

soccer is skewed because the best players tend to be on the best teams in their leagues... their free agency doesn’t spread the talent around very well

How do you go two pages without mentioning Wayne Gretzky? Especially after someone else said Sydney Crosby?

No kidding. He even beats the parameters of the thread title. Gretzky was hyped as the next great one when he playing Pee Wee hockey as a 12 year old! Kid traveled across the country to play in the Pee Wee Quebec Tournament and it was news. Had his picture taken with Gordie Howe. Goes on to becoming the greatest ever in the sport and people don't even bother debating it like they do with MJ or Lebron. It's Gretzky by a mile.

But there tends to be ~5 big leagues, leading to 10+ all-star teams, and they have a tournament where they still have to play each other.
