Still one of the greatest contracts ever.

Question, does his agent get his % each year or does he collect off the top when the contract is signed?

I am guessing the agent gets a cut every time Bonilla is paid.

Sooooooo many old ball players wished they had done this.

“Mets fans have reason to look back on the Ponzi scheme and Bonilla’s contract with a smile, however. The reason they pushed Bonilla’s deal back for 35 years was to give out contracts to 2000 NLCS MVP Mike Hampton ($5.75 million) and starting outfielder Derek Bell ($5 million). Hampton, who left a year later for Colorado as a free agent, gifted the Mets’ compensatory pick that they used on David Wright.“

Forgot about Derek Bell

The Mets released Bonilla in January 2000 but were still on the hook for his $5.9 million salary that season. Believing they were poised to make a significant profit through their investments with Bernie Madoff, Mets ownership instead agreed to defer Bonilla's salary with 8 percent interest and spread it across 25 years from 2011-35.

These deferred contracts aren't really all that uncommon, are they?

Not to this level. I mean they released him in 2000 and still have 13 more years to go

If inflation continues like it is the Mets will be the ones smiling by the end of this.

Braves paid off Bruce Sutter’s deferred comp last season. He was getting $1.12 million annually.

A guy that played in an All Star game when Ronald Reagan was President will be collecting a payroll check in 2035 (if man is still alive).

That's pretty crazy.

Ken Griffey Jr is still being paid by the Cinn Reds as well.
