If soccer is a niche sport baseball and basketball are too.
And they aren't.
So no, you are dead wrong.

It's a niche sport here, yes. And until the MLS can start doling out 185 million dollars for world class superstars in their prime and get a tv deal better than even what espn has with the BPL, it will remain that way. So basically it's going to remain a niche because the two conditions I stated will never happen because until soccer becomes wildly more popular than football, MLS teams won't be able to afford it. And without tv and superstars, it will never come close. Classic catch-22

if i remember i'm going to look at the difference in the tv contracts of the MLS national deal v the new EPL deal
*ETA: frick it i'll do it now
EPL on NBC: $250M for 3 years, or $83.33M/year
LINK
MLS (on multiple networks): $27M/year
Wiki Link, i didn't read the citations
so yeah, niche league

Wow. That NBC plan is impressive.

Zidane was born in Marseille. He is of Algerian descent.

dunno why you are bringing up the MLS tv deal. We are talking about the SPORT, not a specific league.
Again, soccer is NOT a niche sport in this country.
Of course MLS is not getting big time TV deals b/c its only a mid tier league at this point in time.
But that really has nothing to do with the popularity of the sport as a whole in this country.
and to say MLS will never be a top league is foolish too.
Its growing at a very respectable rate and has smartly kept a limit on what teams can spend so you dont have a high risk of having owners who spend themselves into bankruptcy while the league builds a domestic fanbase.

You do know the producers set up those questions during telecasts so the analyst can educate the audience.

There is a difference between explaining terms and Gus Johnson having no idea. He had no idea. He was horrendous.

Stop being arrogant and elitist soccer fans.

Educate the audience? Please. You're deluding yourself. To educate Gus is more like it. Tell me the last time an announcer defined "lateral" or "hail Mary" or "alley-oop" or "grand slam" or "balk" on the air. Never. Width and nutmeg are equally obvious words to soccer viewers.
How would you explain Gus's lack of knowledge of the players' names? Or the rules of the game? Producers set that up too?. . .
I'm not overly critical of Gus. I realize he hasn't spent much time following the sport or its famous teams and players. That's not his fault. I place the blame on Fox for assigning a rookie commentator - rookie with regards to soccer, at least - to the most important matches, straight out of the gate. The Champions League semifinal, FA Cup final, etc. are not the appropriate places for a commentator to learn the rules of the game.

yes, but remember that they are trying to bring in a new audience. it's not like this hire wasn't well calculated. people will tune in to watch Gus, including those who may not know an overly large number of soccer terms, such as nutmeg.
i'm not using that as an excuse, but it is a relatively logical explanation.

Fair enough. I just don't like it.
Agree to disagree.

You are being elitist. You're not familiar with Madden and Summerall calling NFL games on network TV back in the day. Madden would take 5 minutes explaining what a tackle was. FOX is broadcasting to a broader peripheral audience. They already have hard core soccer fan.
