4" off plate, his best pitch

Was the worst period in umpiring, ever.

Gibson in 1968 was more impressive, I still don't know how he lost 9 games.

38 earned runs in 31 games, 13 shutouts, and a 1.12 ERA!

had agreed to a deal that would have sent the left fielder to the Braves for Alejandro Pena, Keith Mitchell and a prospect. Braves GM John Schuerholtz was confident that he could work out an extension to keep Bonds in Atlanta, and the teams were all set to announce the deal -- that is, until Pirates manager Jim Leyland got wind of it.

The Braves always wanted Bonds...I believe they also made an offer in the late 80's that included SS Andres Thomas (highly thought of at the time)but that trade was also nixed.

Should have let the trade go through. At least get a few good players in return.

This is no secret if you watched him pitch in the 90's.

He always, always, always, always, got that first pitch strike called that was a foot off the plate outside.

Always. Catcher would frame it up...Ump would call it. Braves taught that to all their pitchers.

Umps in the 90's were total dumbasses. They called a strike if you threw a perfect strike to the catcher regarless of how far the catcher was off the plate.

Which is why it was strange people were shocked by Livian Hernandez, Braves had been doing it all during the 90's. Pitch outside, pitch outside, pitch off the plate, frame it way off the plate...but right height and perfect strike to the catcher. He would sit right behind the plate and then move outside just before the pitch was thrown.

He had 15 K's that game...a career high and the closest he ever came was 11 k's in '01

u]We’re looking for some sort of confirmation that Gregg’s strike zone was comically large. Confirmation beyond popular opinion. We can begin with some of the numbers. In Game 5, Livan Hernandez struck out 15 Braves batters in a complete game. That stands as Hernandez’s career-high. The runner-up: 11 strikeouts, in July 2001. Hernandez has done that once. He’s struck out ten batters in a game twice. Hernandez has started many hundreds of games.

Hernandez threw 143 pitches, and 88 of them were strikes. Of those, 37 were called strikes. That regular season, 29% of Hernandez’s strikes were called. In Game 5, 42% of Hernandez’s strikes were called. The other starter in Game 5 was Greg Maddux, and he struck out nine batters in seven innings. That was well above his regular-season rate. But 29% of his strikes were called, against a season rate of 28%. It’s not a great measure, but that hints at a more favorable strike zone for Hernandez.

I loved to watch him pitch. He had the best control of any other pitcher I ever seen.

shite, the “4 inches outside” crowd arrived. It was never 4 inches. 2 maybe. But getting that call is a skill that requires placing the ball on the black, then slowly walking it out so each pitch looks the same as the one before it. Most elite pitchers can do this.

Although, I do agree, I think it’s a lot closer than I previously thought. Maddux’s ‘92-‘98 run is historic, with ‘94 & ‘95 being some of the greatest seasons ever. But yeah, peak Pedro is the GOAT.

Fwiw that's not a straight on shot so it's tough to say how far off the plate it is.

Zack Godley has 7 more wins than deGrom this season, but also has a ERA that is 2.61 runs higher than deGrom. Wins should never be factored into a pitcher’s value, worth or GOATness for that matter.
