Tony Gywnn batted .394 with 5 Hrs and only 3 strike outs, in over 250 plate appearances against the Big 3 Brave pitchers.

30 for 65 vs Smoltz
39 for 91 vs Maddux
29 for 93 vs Glavine

1 outta 14 is pathetic with that collection of talent.
'93 team was absolutely loaded and couldn't make it past the playoffs...same with the '98 team. '98 had perhaps the best starting rotation ever and couldn't make it past the Padres

Don't get me started

Actually he was and 2002 was another 100 win team that couldn't make it out of the playoffs.

Always missing that power bat. Front office thought they could draft one, but A. Jones wouldn't take the next step. Rumor was Bonds almost came to Atl. I can't remember why it didn't happen.

The Bonds deal was as official as it gets. Jim Leyland lost his shite when notified about the trade and it was subsequently nulled. Bonds of course signed with SF - and Atlanta, due to not allocating all of their cap room on that deal, had to settle for some scrub named Greg Maddux.

#2: Andruw Jones averaged 36 homers a year from 97-06. Chipper averaged 30+. Brian Jordan averaged 30 while in Atlanta. Lopez probably had the most pop behind the dish in the league aside from Piazza. Gant, McGriff, Gallaraga, Klesko, Dye, Reggie Sanders, Castilla, Giles, etc. etc. The Braves never had an issue with the long ball

Power wasn't the issue...they finished 2nd in the NL in
HR's in '96,'97,'98 and 4th in '99

Javy,Chipper,Andruw and Galarraga all hit 40+ at one time or another for the Braves.

The biggest issue in the playoffs was the lack of clutch hitting and inability to manufacture runs ...yea, occasionally the BP let them down but they still had some very good bullpen s over the '14 year run.

What a bitch...he was gonna lose em eventually and instead got nothing for him when he signed with the Giants.

Didn't see that...maybe Ted imposed an artificial cap but he never had a problem cutting checks. He was making $$ at
the gate and especially from TV.

I went to one of those complete games as a kid with my family at Turner. It was unreal.

He also once threw a 76-pitch complete game.

Most impressive feat in baseball history

Red Barrett threw a 58-pitch complete game. That's a little more impressive IMO.

Plus it would have been nice to have him choking for the opponent in the playoffs.

Who were the Bucs supposedly getting in return? I don't remember that trade.

Maybe I worded it wrong. They missed that star player in the field and plate to push them over the top. Pitching was there. Fielding was fine. But Mr clutch in October was missing.

had agreed to a deal that would have sent the left fielder to the Braves for Alejandro Pena, Keith Mitchell and a prospect. Braves GM John Schuerholtz was confident that he could work out an extension to keep Bonds in Atlanta, and the teams were all set to announce the deal -- that is, until Pirates manager Jim Leyland got wind of it.

The Braves always wanted Bonds...I believe they also made an offer in the late 80's that included SS Andres Thomas (highly thought of at the time)but that trade was also nixed.

The Braves should have won more than one with all the talent they had.

They definitely should've won it all in 96. They were a far better team than the Yankees. They choked BAD in that world series.

Would have been interesting to think what other prospect we would have given up. Mitchell was #89 according to Baseball America that year.

#4 Chipper Jones
#8 Ryan Klesko
#13 Mark Wohlers
#19 Mike Kelly
#56 David Neid
#78 Javy Lopez

Other Braves in the top 100.

Not sure but I don't think it was any of the top 3

This is from '88...Bobby blew this one if true.Andres Thomas was prized for his potential but never panned out.

quote:

The Pirates coveted Andres Thomas. The Bucs were in dire need of a shortstop, and Bobby Cox saw his in to go after his man. Initial talks surrounded a Bonds for Thomas, one-for-one deal. Pittsburgh GM Larry Doughty had other thoughts. If he was moving Bonds, he would need Thomas and one of the Braves elite, young starting pitchers. Cox refused. Having already shot down previous deals involving his young arms, he stood his ground.

I believe Derek Lilliquist was the pitching prospect.
