Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.) said Thursday he plans to introduce legislation that would allow NCAA student-athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness.

Walker said he intends to introduce the Student-Athlete Equity Act next week, days before the start of the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments, two of the largest annual events in college athletics.

"This is the time and the moment to be able to push back and defend the rights of these young adults,” Walker, a former college athlete, told the Raleigh News & Observer.

The legislation would amend the definition of a qualified amateur sports organization in the tax code, lifting the restriction on student-athletes receiving compensation for their name and likeness, The News & Observer reported.

Now suddenly the Politards will all emotionally and irrationally support this idea after being part of the "they get paid--an education" audience for decades.

Why I've supported this for a long time is it changes zilch about the current structure.

Players just can get extra $ from non-university sources if the market supports it. It's completely market based and requires nothing extra from schools.

If a market's there for a player's likeness, why should we or the NCAA be in the business of trying to squelch it?

Trump needs to jump on in support of this bill so the Democrats will be against it.

I feel like this would be a loophole for boosters to pay athletes. What would happen if a booster agreed to pay a high school recruit 20,000 dollars to be in his commercial? I think it would be interesting to see a freshman be in a commercial before playing a down at a school. I’m all for players being payed but imagine having a school like Oregon having players in Nike commercials.

This is just sad. They already get paid and benefit from the branding the universities provide.

none of the govt's business what NCAA athletes do. Let those players go play overseas if they want to profit. They have that option.

This doesnt seem like a political party issue. Ive seen plenty of republicans that support this and plenty of democrats who think the way you describe.

If you profit, you aren't an amateur. If you aren't an amateur, you don't get to play amateur sports. Pretty simple.

Keep the lid on that ol' can o' worms.
