Except for Playoff games played outdoors, especially in bad weather... Kinda like the situation we have today. So yes, Coaches should understand the situation and make decisions accordingly.

4th and 1 = Yes go for it
4th and 2 = FG time
4th and 4 = stupid Chicago bears level

What does the math say about having a stiff at QB?

If the favored Broncos lose by 3, when the crowd thaws out, sometime Monday, they're going to realize how that easier field goal would have been a better choice.

I bet Denver wishes they had those 3 points right about now

Currently averaging 0 points per FGA on the last 2 FGA.
Always take the points

Well, Payton will have all off-season to think about leaving those points on the field. They are about to lose 10-7. Don’t get greedy early in football games, analytics be damned — especially in games where points will be at a premium

The thing he should think about is why he called a 20 yard pass that went to the 1st down marker (1 yard down field), instead of doing a tush push.
I don't care that they went, it was the stupid play call.

Go for it. Lions, not sheep
Well the lions have certainly missed out on a lot of opportunities over the last few years. That’s indisputable

The title of this thread doesn’t say anything about that either
I would however love to see all the threads calling it stupid to go for it on 4th 1 when they make it and score a TD or even if they attempt but miss the FG

What’s the score?

As I said before, analytics only tells you what to do based on the percentage of 1 play. It doesn’t account to conditions/situations outside of that play.
Posted on 1/25/26 at 5:03 pm to TigersHuskers
even if you make it, it doesn't mean you score a touchdown
Posted on 1/25/26 at 5:03 pm to TigersHuskers
People only say this when they don't get it and then don't say anything when it's converted. The numbers aren't close.

Historical NFL trends show 4th and 1 or less conversions typically in the 65-75%+ range when teams go for it.

Another reason to take the points. You know the weather is coming.
