Most sports there is a debate to who the greatest player is/was. Woods or Nicklaus, Ali or Louis, Brady or Rice..

Hockey doesn't have that, there is only one. When you google 'the great one' the result is Gretzky.

Gretzky is so clearly the greatest GOAT that this question is just silly

Gretzky not only has the most points, he has more assists than the second guy has points.

That is ruh-tar-ded.

Gretzky and Nicklaus are the GOATS in their sport. Federer probably is too, but lots of mediocre records against other top competitors drag him down

Federer is older than his contemporaries. Federer is penalized for being the second best clay player of his generation. If he was avg, he wouldn’t of played Nadal so much. If there were as many grass court tournaments as clay, this record would also be different.

Nicklaus easily. Tiger is the only one who is close to his major total and will not win another one. The makers of golf equipment said that Nicklaus would have "probably" averaged 360 yards per drive with todays drivers.

The Great One.

I can't even wrap my head around some of his records. No other player has had a 200 point season and he did it 4 times, 3 in a row at one stretch. He has 9 of the 11 highest point totals for a season. For a frame of reference, the highest point seasons in the NHL have been in the 100-125 point range over the past 2 decades or so.

Ovie had 65 in 07-08, Stamkos had 60 in 11-12...nobody else has been even remotely closer than that recently.

I'm not disputing Gretzky's GOATness, even people who have never watched a hockey game in their lives know who he is. I will however say 2 things. I wish Super Mario wasn't plagued with injuries in his career because I believe he could have given him a run for his money, maybe not surpass him but it definitely wouldn't be as big of a margin as it is. And (not disrespecting his skill at all don't get this twisted) back then offensive stats were highly inflated. Last year the highest point leader was McDavid at an even 100. I just pulled a random year, the 92-93 season (mainly because Gretzky was hurt most of the year so he wasn't on the leaderboards just to illustrate my point), 21 players had 100 or more points, leader was at 160. And Gretzky wasn't any of them due to injury. Go look at the list of most points in a season. The top 13 are all Gretz/Mario, all 160+, and Wayne had multiple 200+, all came in 80s/early 90s

Not saying he wouldn't be a beast in today's league, but he wouldn't be putting up absurd stats like he did back then, but he'd still be at the top but the gap wouldn't be as wide IMO. Since 2000 only 19 players have even broken 100 (many of them only once, a few did it more than once), only 3 players have even broken 120. Crosby, Jagr, and oddly enough Jumbo Joe.
