The maestro of the doctored pitch died today at 84.

Spit, KY Jelly, rosin...he slathered balls with all of it.

Dude was a great entertainer as well and a Hall of Famer. Only him and Clemons have won Cy Young's in their forties. Even with all of his shenanigans, it took 20 years in the big leagues for him to get caught and tossed for the first time for an illegal ball.

First MLB game I ever saw was in Dodger Stadium in '78. Perry vs Don Sutton (2 HOF'ers). Perry went 21-6 that year with SD. Garvey hit 2 bombs that night, Dodgers won.

Man...another legend checks into the Field of Dreams.

One of the Immortalized in 'We're Talkin' Baseball"

Talkin’ Baseball (Willie, Mickey, and the Duke) Lyrics
The Whiz Kids had won it
Bobby Thomson had done it
And Yogi read the comics all the while
Rock 'n roll was being born
Marijuana, we would scorn
So down on the corner
The national past-time went on trial

We're talkin' baseball!
Kluszewski, Campanella
Talkin' baseball!
The Man and Bobby Feller
The Scooter, the Barber, and the Newc
They knew 'em all from Boston to Dubuque
Especially Willie, Mickey, and the Duke
Well, Casey was winning
Hank Aaron was beginning
One Robbie going out, one coming in
Kiner and Midget Gaedel
The Thumper and Mel Parnell
And Ike was the only one winning down in Washington

We're talkin' baseball!
Kluszewski, Campanella
Talkin' baseball!
The Man and Bobby Feller
The Scooter, the Barber, and the Newc
They knew 'em all from Boston to Dubuque
Especially Willie, Mickey, and the Duke

Now my old friend, The Bachelor
Well, he swore he was the Oklahoma Kid
And Cookie played hooky
To go and see the Duke
And me, I always loved Willie Mays
Those were the days!

Well, now it's the 80's
And Brett is the greatest
And Bobby Bonds can play for everyone
Rose is at the Vet
And Rusty again is a Met
And the great Alexander is pitchin' again in Washington

I'm talkin' baseball!
Like Reggie, Quisenberry
Talkin' baseball!
Carew and Gaylord Perry
Seaver, Garvey, Schmidt and Vida Blue
If Cooperstown is calling, it's no fluke
They'll be with Willie, Mickey, and the Duke

Willie, Mickey, and the Duke.

Oh - this one hurts.
RIP Gaylord. (pronounced Gaylerd)
Just a genuine man that had a dull twinkle in his eye that gave away a wise Country Boy sensibility. He always had a light sarcasm to him and saw things through a humorous lens if you could get him to open up.
Except for fishing. He lived to fish. Only way they could get him to Corpus Christi for the Anniversary of the 1957 (or 58) Texas League Championship was to guarantee him a couple days in the Gulf.
Rest in Peace, Gaylord Perry.

Wow I would have guessed he was long passed.

I pulled a signed 1991 Upperdeck card of his back in the day. Nine year old me was hyped.

Mike Shannon tells the story of Perry’s response when seeing Bob Uecker after Uecker hit a game-winning home run off him-“Here comes the worst effin’ day of my life.” He said that for years afterwards.

I've never understood why having something slippery on your fingers like vagisil aids in pitching. It always seemed to me that you wanted more grip on the ball rather than less. One team back in the 70s got in trouble over scuffed balls. They checked the supply of balls and every ball had a scuff on the exact same spot. This makes sense as the the scuff gives better grip

Damn.

First it was Trivette from Walker Texas Ranger, then Christine Mcphie of Fleetwood Mac yesterday(that one hurts) and now Gaylord.

It's been a tough week

I didn't know about Christine McVie!
That's her Fleetwood Mac song being played ad nausem on the commercials:
"I want to be with you everywhere..."
Saw them in their heyday - 77' or 78' I think.

I always thought it was cool that my father had Gaylord Perry's rookie card, and I had his last. My father was 15 when Perry started, and his son(me) was 11 when he retired. 21 year career. Gaylord transcended generations. RIP
