Anyone else watching it? Amazing environment and amazing course with the Capital in the background. Huge day for IndyCar.
I agree with Josef Newgarden, this has an Indy 500 level feel.
How badly did NASCAR screw up not being a part of this? For them it would've had a Daytona 500 type feel.
It's been a great weekend with IndyCar and IROC. They should've had NASCAR in it as well to celebrate both major American auto racing series.
The turnaround for IndyCar since FOX took an ownership stake has been incredible. 20 - 25 years ago IndyCar was on life support. I could legit see IndyCar bypassing NASCAR in the next 5 years.

Indy has made some gains this year. They still need more races to have less large schedule gaps where they lose momentum.
Nascar keeps tripping over themselves and have a really bad racing car in Cup. NOAP series is better than Cup as the cars are racey. Trucks is also better than Cup
F1 has completely jumped the shark and lost a ton of US fans. They went to electric cars where driver isn’t driving he is dependent in electric power and just steers. They also moved to Apple and that is another streamer that fans are tired of all the streamers and fees.
This DC Indycar race is pretty awesome. They put it together in 6 months and the place is packed with fans. Competent leadership and partnerships did an amazing job creating this race in such a short time, especially considering the obstacles and security measures needing taken. Hats off to them.

Nascar did its Freedom 250 2 months ago on Coronado Base in San Diego
Probably didn't want the stench from swamp on them. Plus Nancy Pelosi would have probably tried to pull another Jan 6th and jailed all the Trump voters for attending the race.

Didn't take long for the first caution.

I agree. Even 5 years ago, while IndyCar had recovered and stabilized, it was always the "other" series. It was far behind F1 and NASCAR.
F1 did the biggest own goal they could possibly do going to Apple TV. They should've seen the disaster Apple TV was for MLS, causing US fans to forget that league even exists. And it's done the same thing for F1.
The mistake F1 made was assuming all the new U.S. fans were already diehards. When it reality, a lot of them were fans because F1 was trendy. It takes years to make a diehard fan. I know for me, I got into F1 but I was still a casual fan. Definitely not a fan enough to commit to Apple TV for most of the year. Combine that with the terrible new F1 car and IMO F1 has lost all the gains in U.S. fans from the last 5 years.
F1 fell into the same trap that NASCAR fell into in the late 90s/early 2000s. NASCAR dumped it's loyal southern fans for fans who were going to dump NASCAR for the next fad and did. F1 dumped it's loyal U.S. fans by going to Apple TV and now many of those loyal U.S. fans, as well as many of the bandwagon fans, aren't watching. The old out of sight out of mind.
NASCAR's Gen7 car is great on 1.5 miles and fine enough on road course, but yeah the Gen7 car is terrible on superspeedways as well as short tracks.
IndyCar's has made massive strides this year. Having Roger Penske and FOX Sports own it has made a massive difference and shows just how incompetent the Hulman-George family really was.
But more than than, IndyCar now has the best pre-show and race coverage. And having all the races on FOX (making it easy on fans to follow, knowing where every race will be) is simple but really effective.
I agree they need more races to keep momentum. But I also like that they end the season right before the beginning of football season. Another smart move not to directly compete with the NFL and College Football like NASCAR tries (and fails) to do.
It wouldn't shock me if FOX ends up dumping NASCAR entirely to focus on IndyCar. And I think it would be good for IndyCar to start in February right after the Super Bowl and have more early season races.

I wonder how hard this course is on the drivers. Indy cars have manual steering and race more on oval tracks. F1 cars race mostly on road tracks and have power steering. Plus this track is bumpy. I bet their forearms are getting a heck of a workout today.

They have talked a lot about how turns 1 and 6 have bumps that are tossing them around a good bit. They grinded them down some over night apparently after practice and qualifying

That's always the challenges with street courses, especially a first time visit. These series pretty much always have to make some minor adjustments during the weekend based on driver feedback. NASCAR did the same during their Chicago Street Races.

Yeah I saw how some of the drivers were missing the turns after being tossed all over the place on the speed bumps before they ground them down. If they wouldn't have ground those speed bumps down, it would have been a disaster with numerous crashes.
This track is still has some noticeable bad bumps.

They did (though it wasn't called Freedom 250), but it just didn't have the atmosphere and energy of this one. Yes the course was really cool being on a naval base, but it just can't compete with it being in D.C. in front of the U.S. Capital.
It just didn't have the scale of this race. I mean you have President Trump and the First Lady here (and who knows who else from the Trump Administration). You have the Presidential motorcade and Air Force One. You had the Secretary of the Interior and the Military giving the command to start engines. Never mind that crazy sequence of the U.S. Armed Forces getting the pace car to the race and President Trump flying the green flag.
You don't think a lot of those IndyCar fans are also NASCAR fans and conservative? And let me remind you, Trump is the President. Nancy Pelosi has largely been pushed aside. Even if the Democrats had tried something (which wouldn't have happened), Trump would've issued an immediate pardon. Politics had nothing to do with it.
The worse part of the pre-race was Mural Bowser calling driver's to their cars. Seems like she was just there to have some D.C representation present, but otherwise she absolutely did not want to be there.
Besides all that though, the NASCAR event mostly honored the Navy. I like how the IndyCar event today truly honored all branches of our Armed Forces.
The NASCAR race at Naval Base Coronado was a cool event and great to honor the U.S. and the Navy. But the Freedom250 IndyCar race today just blows it out of the water. Big miss for NASCAR.

This has been a great event so far. I’d say maybe the best of the 250 celebration.
Im biased because I’m a big racing fan.

I’m surprised they let Danica get that close to the capitol with those guns out.
