No, they were rolling the dice in hoping the gearbox was ok, had they “fixed” it they would have been starting 20. A gamble that didn’t pay off.

I don’t blame them one bit for risking it. If it holds they have the chance to score a long overdue win. They would much prefer a win in Monaco to whatever points they’ll lose to McLaren for best of the rest. This was a chance to get back to their end goal, winning, not fighting for 3rd in constructors. They 100% made the right call, just didn’t work out.
Eta had they fixed it they’d have been giving a 5 place grid penalty.

Thought it was only a 5 grid penalty to change the gearbox, so would have started 6th.
