Watching “Drive to Survive”, and holy shite, Max is a supremely talented, yet insufferable, entitled prick. But I guess those traits run together more often than not.

Agreed. I'm loving watching his success this year, but he's not one of my favorite drivers.

The best part is you can make an argument that all these guys should be described like this

It's easy to identify future world champions when they show both the speed, and that self-important attitude seemingly way earlier than they should. Hamilton, Vettel, Alonso, Schumacher, Senna, etc. have/had these traits. Max is the next in line. I was never a fan of his, however I think he has matured tremendously in the last two years, so I am warming up to him.

The "gentleman" world champions like Damon Hill and Jenson Button are the guys I root for, but they are rare and usually only win because they are in the best car. I liked Mika Häkkinen as well, but he was a little harder to cheer for because he was so painfully quiet and boring. I'm not sure if Nico Rosberg is in this category. I find him a lot more likeable now than when he was driving and desperately trying to get by Hamilton. Lando and Daniel would be extremely popular world champions in this category.

OTOH, Kimi Räikkönen is extremely popular because of his unique DGAF attitude. (I would put Juan Pablo Montoya in this category as well. How else do you describe someone who jumps straight from F1 to NASCAR? )

So then there is George Russell. When he crashed into Bottas and then flew off the handle, the Mercedes bosses were legitimately angry, but I think the narrative that he was hurting his chances to get signed by Mercedes was wrong. He made a mistake but he displayed the fire and attitude that every inch of the road belongs to him and he will take what is his. If he does not take Bottas's seat next year I will be very surprised.

Max is ruthless and doesn’t hide it.

I like that.

Russell definitely falls in your category. He does a good job of hiding it right now. Not being in contention probably keeps the spotlight off, but he has that self important attitude.

DTS might be one of the best marketing moves F1 has ever done. I'm sure a large percentage of the posters in this thread were sucked in by it (myself included), and I found that a ton of friends, relatives, work associates, etc. have all gotten into the sport because of the show.

Yeah that was brilliant exposure. Me and all my buddies binged it in less than a week

Between this and the Euros I am starting to think European sports just MIGHT be better than American ones.

DTS is highly dramatized. I like Max and I think he fits the Red Bull persona very well. Brash, confident, and outspoken.

I think George Russell is way more insufferable than Max could ever dream of being. I can’t remember anyone else on the grid thinking they were so clearly entitled to anything like he thinks he is the Mercedes drive.

I agree, Lando’s boyish looks and impish behavior help to camouflage the fire underneath. How his career and personality progress will be a fun watch.

I’m not buying the George Russel as a saintly choir boy—the Bottas incident proves that point. There is a particular YouTube video where LEC, NOR and Albon were giving Russel crap about the majority of his Insta pics are of him being shirtless. He absolutely craves the attention. Again, like 90% of F1 drivers, but it was humorous insight into what he may truly be like.

That's me, I've exposed a few others to DTS who have started watching F1 as well. I went from having never watched F1 to not being able to get enough of it. I catch practically every practice session, every quali, and every race. Even once the race is over I binge all the info, race review podcast, Missed Apex is great, they also do episodes with former Lotus team boss Matthew Carter that are super insightful, Beyond the Grid, all the analytical videos, etc. I'm not sure any of the people I've suggested DTS to have dived in quite like I have, its pretty much replaced other sports for me.

The dude has been inhaling everyone's exhaust in his shitbucket Williams for several years now because Claire Williams didn't want to let him go. All the while he watched all of his friends got to go on to better teams. I'd have a chip on my shoulder, too.

He’s only in the 3rd year of his deal with Williams.

Albon has been chewed out and spit up Red Bull.
Lando was a McLaren driver so the timing worked out well for him.
Ocon isn’t in that much better of a drive in the Alpine.

He wasn’t going straight into the Mercedes in 2019 or 2020. So he may have been a decent candidate for 2021, but that’s not how it went down. If he had gotten spurned for the 2022 drive, then I think he would have a well-deserved chip on his shoulder, but a lot of formula 1 is being in the right place at the right time.

I already consume pretty much all European or southern hemisphere rugby I can. So figured why not add F1 also. Not much of a soccer fan, but find myself watching a bit of the Euros as well.

Lando has a fire, but I'm not sure he will ever turn cutthroat on his teammates or even that blinders on mentality like Max or Lewis have right now.

He has been pretty open about his mental health issues and was one of the drivers to speak up for Mazepin early on when the mob had their pitchforks. So I think there is a lot of truth with what you see there.

I like Lando, seems pretty talented and appears to be getting better, a bit of a goofball, but when asked tough questions he lets on enough that you know he clearly gets what he's doing. He was a bit timid in his first year, grew up a little in year 2, and seems to have a good handle on that car this season. I don't recall which race(Imola maybe?) but was impress with him staying calm under pressure with Hamilton on his heals and hold him off for a few laps before the Mercedes just got the better of the McLaren. A lesser driver would've allowed Hamilton to force a mistake but he stayed cool.

Even this week when he had to backoff because Lando knew his race wasn't with RBR and Merc. Instead of feeling a need to prove his skill he let them by.

I trust Mclaren to put a hell of a car under him next year with the rules change. And Zac loves him like Horner loves Max so you know the team will be pushing him.
