The year Eddie Irvine came within 2 points of winning the WDC... think about that for a moment.

It was a crazy year in F1.

Had it not been for missing 7 races with the broken leg Schumacher would likely have retired with 8 WDCs.

What???? I do it all the time on xBox.

I'm about to go nuts I'm so ready for this week to get going, but I'm assuming that they are still trying to limit interactions as much as possible, so not much news coming out of the Red Bull Ring.

Ferrari isn't bringing their updated car until Hungary. I don't expect them to be very competitive right away. Red Bull seems optimistic though.

This track is brutal on the cars so it should be an interesting starting race for the season.

DVR is set for the practice in the morning. I'm so pumped to have something competitive back on TV.

Binotto's explanation as to why they moved on from Vettel

quote:

What happened since then? I think the virus and pandemic situation, which changed the entire world, not only our motorsport, our F1. The budget cap has been changed by quite a lot, and is a lot more strict, the regulations have been postponed from '21 to '22, which somehow was something important for us.

quote:

So during the shutdown as Ferrari we had to eventually reconsider our position. We took a decision, so certainly that was our decision, that is our responsibility, and we communicated to him.

Vettel has said he'll follow team orders this year but I'm guessing he'll reconsider his position as well.

Watched some of the practice and a decent amount of talk about Red Bull’s protest against Mercedes DAS.

Will be interesting to see how it shakes out,.

I'm not sure how much DAS matters in Austria but it should be banned just for the sake of competition. Shortest lap of a normal season and they're .5 second faster than the field. Mercedes was already going to win almost every race, it would be nice to watch a few competitive races though.

Eddie Freaking Irvine never so much as scored a pole in his F1 career.

The fact he was a twat's hair away from a WDC is one of the most shameful and lucky misses in motorsports history.

Not a good sign for competitiveness for 1 and 2 unless there’s mechanical failures or rain.

What were they saying about Racing Point during FP2? What I caught sounded like they just mimicked the 2019 Mercedes as much as possible and made huge leaps forward?

Basically. Racing Point also seems to think that they can compete with Ferrari this year. The commentators were saying that they could be in for a few podiums this year as well.

They didn't talk about it but there's been plenty of speculation at a protest being filed soon. RP and Merc have a technical alliance but that doesn't really extend to much of the car's aero. Of course there's nothing in the rules about just copying what you can see. If they've copied things that can't be seen though, that would indicate Mercedes sharing outside of the rules.

Seeing the DAS in action is pretty cool. I didn't realize how much movement the whole system has. He goes in and out a good bit with his steering wheel. Bottas DAS

Incredible leap forward by Merc on DAS. The type of thinking that will be critical in the next phase of F1. Cheap and relatively easy to implement.

Since Merc did it first it is hugely controversial. Had a different team came with the system reaction would be different.

Will be interesting if Red Bull has theirs mounted and in service by the end of the weekend.

DAS has been ruled legal, will be interesting to see if any of the other teams have something like that to implement.

Since it was already deemed illegal for 2021, it seems highly unlikely that teams would spend any money on developing one just for a few races this season. Maybe if a team already has a similar system developed but no one has mentioned any.

Think it will be legal next year, illegal 2022 when the new rules come into play. New rules pushed back a year.

Red Bull definitely has the system. Think they wanted a ruling before implementing and showing their hand.

When they agreed to delay the new car to 2022, Mercedes agreed to go ahead and ban DAS starting in 2021.

LINK

quote:

The move to keep the current regulations for 2021 could have left the door open for Mercedes to keep the advantage it has from its DAS system, which allows drivers to adjust the toe angle of its front wheels while the car is in motion.

However, in the wake of F1 keeping its current cars for another year, the German car manufacturer agreed with other teams and the FIA to a change in the regulations that outlaws it.

It would be funny to see RB show up with DAS tomorrow.

Ah, didn't see that.

I think Red Bull showed their hand with that interview then the challenge. Whether they deploy it this weekend or not is to see.
