Posting for those asking about Mercs dominance.... BlueWaffle posted this in another thread as the cliff notes of why Merc is so far ahead.
quote:
The TLDR version: they’re better because of the name: ROSS BRAWN
Most current F1 teams are on the grid as repackaged versions of older teams sold off... This current Mercedes team actually started in the 70s as Tyrell Racing. A successful team w/ Sir Jackie Stewart winning a bunch of ships... They sold to British American Tobacco (BAT) around 2000 and they partnered with Honda for engines. Longer story short(ish),Honda buys the team outright in 2006 — weren’t very successful, but were the first team to start development on a KERS (Hybrid) system in 2007 and Hired a guy named Ross Brawn as technical director. [Brawn was The man behind Michael Schumacher’s success @ Ferrari.]
After only 3 years, Honda abruptly pulled out of F1 citing the financial crisis, and sold the team outright to Brawn. Brawn has been working on the aero for the 2009 season in all of 2008 considering that season a wash. Then he partners w/ Mercedes for engines. He Shows up with a mostly sponsorless car in 2009 and Wins the drivers & constructors championships after exploiting an aero loophole. Search: “Double Diffuser” He sells the team outright to Mercedes in 2010, and remained there for a bit (I believe he’s still a minority partner even though he’s Sporting Director is F1 now)....
So it’s believed a combo of Mercedes dumping millions into the team + having a leg up (5+ years developing a hybrid engine on the field) + Brawn’s “rules expertise” ....when the new Hybrid powered turbo engines (KERS) Regs came fo be in 2014, Mercedes had every competitive advantage possible.
And they’ve won every single constructors and drivers championship since. End Story time/

No doubt.
Some of us are just deranged that Hamilton won again.

Too bad Gasely could not drive like that during his time with Red Bull.
Albon does not seem to be coming close to Max's performance.
Why did Ricardo leave?

Ricardo and Max didn't get along, and Redbull made it clear that if it was a keep Max or Dani thing, Max would get the nod

And no sane person would turn down the amount of money that Renault was throwing to Ric. Red Bull could have been caught between 2 drivers that could each demand $30MM in annual contracts.
Can’t wait to see Danny at McLaren. He and Lando will be hilarious to watch.

Claire is out at Williams, I figured there would we a purge, didn’t expect it to start this soon.

I assume it was a condition of the sale.

I have a special place in my heart for Claire and Williams. I'm a 3rd generation owner and know how the family business thing works and how much pressure is put on the next generation. I'll really miss her and the rest of the Williams family. Williams has always been my team since I was in high school and they were BMW. A sad day.

Yeah, surprised they didn't hold off until the end of the year, but it shows they are serious about turning the team around.
Might have two new team principals by Mugello. I'm assuming Frank is out as well, didn't see that press release.

From what it sounds like the whole family(are there other members involved besides Frank & Claire?) are stepping aside.
Maybe someone who knows more than me will know the answer since I'm new to all of this, I thought I remember reading about it, or maybe it was in the Williams documentary on Netflix, where at one point there were technically two Williams teams? Frank sold Frank Williams Racing Cars and was eventually pushed out and that team was renamed Walter Wolf Racing. Frank then formed the current version of the team, Williams Grand Prix Engineering in 1977. WWR raced from 1977 to 1979 so there was a couple years of overlap where Frank's old team was on the grid with Franks new team.

Watched FP1 this morning. Is the Ferrari THAT bad and Leclerc is just dragging it around or is the car really just mediocre and Seb no long cares to put in the effort? He was 19th in FP1, only 0.2 ahead of Latifi and 0.15 BEHIND Nissany on hard tires. 1 second back on Leclerc(11th).
With new management and capital at Williams is Latifi now on the hot seat? He's consistently very bad and it looks like the only thing he brings to the table is financial backing.

Ferrari is pretty damn bad... they were the only team who didnt improve on their times over last years Spa weekend
Even teams that run their power units improved over last year
Honestly, LEC at 11 isnt surprising... VET at 19 is... I hope it's because they're trying new bits of kit out on his car
As for Latifi, hes still in his rookie year, but it doesnt look promising

Everybody's been saying they've got more problems than just the power unit. The chassis is a dog too. I think they adopted a change in philosophy between last year and this year and it didn't work out. Last year they were a low downforce car and were very fast in a straight line. This year they piled on downforce and then coupled that with an underpowered ICE for the double-whammy.
I don't know how much Binotto is to blame but it does seem like Arrivabene had them going in the right direction before he was sacked.

Oh no. FIA poked the bear and now the bear is hungry and angry and ready for a fight.

I believe this was discussed on the Missed Apex podcast recently, that they've changed aero philosophy, where Mercedes and other teams direct air out/around the car Ferrari is now trying to direct air in/under the car, something about inbound vs outboard aerodynamics that's probably way over my head. The change has obviously been a huge flop which might explain why their customer teams, even with less power, have picked up pace, and they've fallen flat on their face.

Probably not. Nissany still has his commitments and I'm not sure that the new company has a commitment to winning. They need to turn Williams into a profitable company and pitting son's of billionaires against each other is a solid plan

It could be that they're starting to change over to the upcoming new regulations. This change has a bigger emphasis on downforce being generated under the car -- which is "cleaner" in terms of creating less turbulence for following cars. Move the air under the car faster than the air above the car and you create downforce (negative lift).
