I Was Fired From Deadspin for Refusing to ‘Stick to Sports’

Pretending that sports can take place in a vacuum would have been profoundly dishonest.

Reporting sports with integrity requires knowing that there’s no way to wall off the games from the world outside. To anyone who knows anything about sports or cares about the world outside the arena, the notion that sports should or even can be covered merely by box scores and transaction wires is absurd.

Deadspin was the voice of the long-suffering fan, finding the humor and the heartbreak in everything in the world of sports. It was the fan wondering why he was paying $200 to go to a football game to watch a team whose owner would rather pocket profit than pay to improve the roster. It was also the fan troubled by the culture and the politics of sports, the fan who couldn’t help noticing that the larger issues of the real world spilled onto the field. Sticking to sports, pretending that sports can take place in a vacuum, would have been profoundly dishonest.

I liked his article defending the Pelicans name while everyone else was killing it

but that's the only Deadspin article I've ever read and/or shared on social media

He was fired because he did exactly what his boss told him not to do

The same would happen to everyone

So he is admitting that he wasn’t capable or willing to do the job he was tasked to do, are we supposed to feel bad for him?

If that’s all they actually produced then I’d agree with him. I enjoyed their “inside-baseball” articles that tackled the bullshite that underlies sports ownership and college athletics and such. But that’s not all they wrote and that’s not why they all quit.

He is 100% lying.

They flat out said Politics was fair game as long as Sports intersected with politics.

What he is saying doesn’t match all the random Trump-bashing which has nothing to do with sports outside of teams visiting the White House or th e LSU-Bama game.

The “Speaking of feet, Tony Atlas is an a-hole!” routine is funny once in a while. Not every damn article.

G/O media really screwed up the editorial change. If they brought in a new editor before announcing the "stick to sports" stuff, they would have gotten little backlash.

Also because his insubordination was bad for business.

If readership increased he would have been forgiven.
