Not even close. It used to be snarky sports commentary with the occasional political jab to straight up political commentary with sports thrown in because they had to.

Magary was hands down my favorite sports writer for a long time until his Phil Robertson hit piece. I don't even give a shite about hunting, duck shite, religion, or the duck people but after that piece blew up it went to his head and he went off the rails.

The deadspin mailbag, dead wrestler of the week and other stories used to be a fun read a long time ago. I really think Barstool made them believe every position they took was justified.

Sounds like you are projecting what you thought/wanted Deadspin to be and how it actually operated. The editors and writers never just stuck to sports, and if profits grew because readers responded to its expansion to posts outside of sports or were sports adjacent then I don't see the problem.

That was a GQ article written six years ago next month, and was published before the Bollea v Gawker judgement. Evidently Drew's writing and employment didn't hurt the company and even survived buyouts and layoffs. What you are arguing is that when personal opinions conflict with business, protect your personal opinions.

I didn't say a thing about GQ or the Hulk stuff. All I was saying is that once it blew up and became a big deal, he became a different writer. Including for Deadspin.

Yeah I'm really not. They were never strictly sports and I never thought they should be. They spent a ton of time lambasting ESPN and their anchors back in the day. Magary's "Communist's Guide to the Beijing Olympics" is the best piece I ever read on that site hands fricking down and it had very little to do with sports.

It absolutely grew because of those reasons because it was different. At one point it was sports with some politics tied in. At some point it became politics with "how can we tie some sports shite in." Yes the not-strictly-sports factor helped them grow but you can't act like they didn't undergo a pretty big shift in the last 5-6 years.

I used to read Magary on the old KissingSuzyKolber site. He got old fast. The RANDOM capitalization in the middle of SENTENCES for comedic effect made me think peej was his screen name here when I joined Tigerdroppings. He was one of those guys you think are funny or cool when you first meet/read him and 6 weeks later think is a huge dork.

Yeah I first read his stuff in 2005 or so. His style isn't for everyone but when he was on he was a great read.

Barry is stupid. He should write NBA/China/Hongkong from the freedom of speech angle. That will make him untouchable, i. e. Unfirable.

To be frankly, I do not like mixing sports with politics. Life is already tough enough. Sports is the only avenue for a lot of people to relax, enjoy family time. I would rather to admire the dunks by James, the running by Sanders, the catching by To than debating kneel down during the anthem or the president impeachment.

Barry was fired for his editorial decisions, not his writing, which was not sticking to sports. He was editor at Deadspin because the last one left the company and G/O Media didn't hire a replacement and he was named interim editor. Even if he wrote a piece about the NBA/China/HK he would have still been fired for disobeying Spanfeller's mandate to stick to sports.

So then if Deadspin was financially profitable why mess with why it was successful?

It doesn't sound like he was doing anything of the sort. There is a difference between being snarky and funny, and being blatant propaganda. Deadspin started out the former; morphed to the latter.

You still haven't proved Deadspin was profitable, just the blog family as a whole.

Just because something is profitable doesn't mean it can't be improved to make even more money, and also because something is profitable now doesn't mean it will continue being profitable in the future.

Gets fired By Deadspin for talking politics, gets asked to write an op-ed in the New York Times. That's a predictable outcome.
