For years, the Texas Longhorns have been hailed as college football’s ultimate cash cow. In 2011, Texas was the first college football team ever to record $100 million in revenue. In 2014, the team generated more in profit – $92 million – than all but two teams made that year in revenue.

But there’s a new No. 1, and you don’t even have to leave the state to find them: Texas A&M is now college football's most valuable program.

Across the three years prior to last season, Texas A&M averaged annual revenues of $148 million, the most of any program in the nation. That not only tops the Longhorns; it leaves them in the dust. Over the same time period, Texas football averaged $133 million in revenue, making the Longhorns a distant second.

It's been widely reported that the Aggies closed the gap with the cross-state rival Longhorns because of a vast increase in contributions. And indeed, from 2014 through the 2016-17 season, the Texas A&M athletic department earned $260 million in contributions, nearly double what any other school made in that time. For reference, in those years, Texas had total athletic contributions of $123 million; Florida, which ranks second in the category, totaled contributions of $138 million. Texas A&M, meanwhile, allocated $119 million of its total contributions just to the football team.

A college athletic program is bringing in 150 million dollars. Is this not getting out of hand?

Imagine the profits if title 9 programs weren’t weighing most these schools down.

DAMN that margin by which they separate themselves from the Longhorns is pretty impressive a lot of history and tradition for the Aggies despite it not being reflected in national championship trophies to a great degree

Jimbo’s $75mil is chump change

Not surprising. Their fans and alums are crazy loyal and some are extremely wealthy. I would be interested to see what their percentage is of graduates giving back to the school. I imagine it’s also #1 or damn close.

The Aggie alumni network takes care of itself too. Moreso than I’ve seen from any other school.

If they start winning aTm will shatter records. Football revenues and endowment.

Idk about what percentage actually give back, but I remember reading something a while back that since A&M completely exploded as a school from the late 70s and on to now, the majority of our living alumni are entering into prime "donation" years and we have a huge amount, if not the most in the country, in that demographic and that has probably led to us taking over the #1 spot

And yet only a handful of the schools on that list havr athletic departments that turn an overall profit when you look at the athletic department as a whole and not just football. College football profits keep most other sports programs afloat.
