For the old(er) heads of the MSB: Was it obvious UNLV was cheating like crazy?

Did they and Tark stick out like a sore thumb?
I was just becoming old enough to pay attention, so I remember Duke beating them, but overall, I didn’t see them come up.

No.
Also, nobody cheated more than UCLA when John Wooden was there.

How else was the Big West gonna have the #1 team in the country?

Larry Johnson is a glaring example how much college basketball has changed.
He was a McDonalds All-american that couldn't qualify academically, so he went to a Junior college. These days he would for sure let in to any college he wanted.
He wins JC player of the year as a freshman at Odessa. Could have gone pro but stayed. He wins JC player of the year as a sophomore too. He is a lock 1st rounder. But goes to UNLV.
As a Junior, he is a 1st team All-american, UNLV wins the Championship, and he is the projected 1st pick of the draft. But he returns for his Senior year.
As a senior he wins every award there is. His team is undefeated until the final 4. He's the 1st pick of the draft.
It's an incredible career that will never happen again. He bypassed going pro 3 times (maybe 4). Today he'd never go to college and be in the pros right out of high school. Of course he got tons of benefits, over and under the table.
I don't think he took a dive against Duke though. It was a tight game that UNLV shouldn't have lost. They just weren't a deep team and got edged out. But they weren't any different than any other team at that time. They just had the best talent. Was Michigan any different the next couple of years? You think the fab 5 wasn't paid off?

They were hence why they got put on probation and the Fab Five was banned/erased from history at Michigan. Also lead to the downfall of the friendship among the fa five and Chris Webber. There's a 30/30. That said, their entire saga was due to them not being paid tremendously. They ushered in the modern style of basketball and got nothing for it. A media phenomenon.
