I remember telling my buddies “future pope” when that crowd shot happened.

The man walked many miles across a decade without roads carrying water for villagers in Peru yet he truly learned suffering from the Sox.

Pretty cool that the pope is a fan. Its hard to watch the sox these days, but I still power through the games

The last few years have been torture, but I can't lie. The Cubs claiming the Pope as a fan, and then getting community noted for it, was a fairly historical win for us. I don’t care how petty it is.

You shouldn’t call people sluts, but anyway, that would make him more popular than he is.

I’d guess that someone who already knew him at the time saw him on the broadcast and remembered.

I'd take it one step further and say the Pope knows he was caught on camera that day. You're absolutely right that at least one person saw him and recognized in that moment, and I'd bet someone also mentioned it to him.

haha im glad in not alone in my Sox fandom here. It's been rough but it's my team so I still watch them , and LSU. But yeah, I saw the marquee on Wrigley field , and all the fans claiming him, that was a pretty good W for us. in the last decade we've had a president and a pope, what are the chances?

Let’s define “fan”

He probably had a ticket account in his name for whatever reason… maybe he bought Cubs/Sox tickets from the Cubs

Now if they caught noted White Sox fan Obama on that broadcast… they knew

O was already a Senator and being touted as a future POTUS so if he went to the game they would have looked for him.

In October 2005? He wasn’t that well known yet

He was the outsider in 08 running against Hillary

He was the keynote speaker at the 2004 convention and one of his books had just been republished and pumped by Oprah.

Obviously not as famous as now, of course.

He rocketed after the 2004 convention.

He gave the keynote and pretty much everyone knew he would be a factor in 08
