I’m watching the Netflix doc, and we hit the point where they are discussing the rape trial. I was only 6 at the time. Oddly enough, his NES video game was, and still is, a favorite. I don’t recall anybody telling me he was a bad guy or anything. Nobody directed me away from his game. I do remember it being a big deal when he was let out, and then teed off on Peter NcNeely.

Naturally, the documentary leans in the direction that Tyson was innocent. I also found it interesting that they showed protesters crying racism when the accuser was also black.

I am curious what the adults in the room thought when this was front and center back then, especially pre internet and social media.

Likely dumbass liberals and they aren’t know to be the smartest or to even look at the most basic of facts.

His story was that he had a history of massive thuggery as a kid until Cus miraculously turned his life around so it wasn't a surprise. Plus it was obvious after the Douglas fight that whatever discipline he'd found was gone.

This was after he was married to and divorced from Robin Givens, who accused him of abuse and manic depression. Their relationship was all over tabloids and late night talk shows.

Plus he had his whole "troubled youth." So it wasn't like he had a pristine reputation when the rape allegations came out.

I was a big Tyson fan back in his day. I don't believe in the she was dressed sexy so she deserved to be raped, obviously that's pure insanity. I also think her trying to play innocent going to his room very late at night and not knowing what he wanted is dumb. I know in an interview after he served his time he said something to the effect of "I didn't rape her but I got away with a lot of other crimes when I was younger".

I was born in 80 and he was one of my favorites. Watched boxing with my grandpa and from the begging he always called him a “jailbird” but I didn’t care. Sucked to me when he went to jail but I didn’t know any of the facts other than my favorite fighter was going to be gone for a few years.

Watched the Doc as well.
I thought it was more of the jury/town being mostly white.

Cus death and firing Rooney was no bueno

I am of the bias that he probably sexually assaulted or raped someone but the specific woman who brought charges probably was not one of them. She appeared to be after a paycheck more than anything. Tyson also seems to have a perverse honesty about certain things and ended up with a longer stay in prison because he wouldn't admit to the rape as a condition of earlier release.

He was a spiraling mess once Don King took over though. Cus seemed to have been the only guy in boxing Mike respected and who had Mike's best interest at heart.

I just finished it amd thought it was pretty good.

Mike seems to still be battling some serious demons. But it's good to see him surrounded by a loving family to help him get through it. His wife seems completely devoted to him.

Hopefully he can find a way to focus on what he has in life to be grateful for because he has plenty of that despite all life has thrown at him.
