I think it does not count. You should have to be an active player, perhaps an All-Star for it too count.

What if there aren't any stars that are gay? It shouldn't matter what level of player this guy is.
Robbie Rogers, former MLS player that was in England, came out a little while ago. It didn't matter that he was a fringe USMNT player that had a hard time getting consistent playing time in England's third division, it still had a worldwide impact.

But as of right now, he's never played in the NBA as in games played/practiced as an openly gay player.
If no one picks him, then he's not really the first openly gay player to play in the NBA IMO.

Shouldnt be to tough for him to do that. He has been hiding the fact that he has downs syndrome for years. This should be easy.
