Iona is a great job. Interesting to see if any other cinderella-y coaches get looks elsewhere

Good move for him.

Pat Kelsey (Charleston) and Bob Richey (Furman) will most likely get some interest

Pretty incredible that one game fast forwarded his career 3 steps ahead.

i mean, the tournament is usually a spring board for lower tier program coaches to show out and ultimately get better opportunities.

I’m guessing you would turn down a much higher paying job with better opportunity?

Pat Kelsey (Charleston)

You have to wonder if there is some sort of skeleton in the closet that has kept him from getting a big job. He had a really good record at Winthrop. He was hired by UMass in 2017 before backing out of the job right before his introductory press conference citing "personal reasons". The thought then was that he was in line for a better job than UMass. However, he stayed at Winthrop another 4 years before taking the Charleston job...which really wasn't a big step up (if a step up at all). And it is not like he had bad years at Winthrop following 2017. He was 23-1 and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2021.

That's 2 coaches with Cinderalla taking jobs in NYC metro. That guy from St Peter's going to Seton Hall and now Anderson. Good for him.

It's funny how some of these guys turn one or two upset wins in the NCAAT into better gigs, and how many become failures. One of the better ones that I remember is when John Groce took Ohio to the Sweet 16 in 2012, and he turned it into the Illinois job where he flopped. He was a whopping 34-30 in the MAC during his four years at Ohio, but turned a win over Michigan and USF into a top level Big 10 job. Some of these AD's need their head's checked.

Happens every year. Shaheen Holloway had one great season at St. Peters (in four years) and was hired by his alma mater, Seton Hall. He was a really good player at Seton Hall. But ask Georgetown, Michigan, North Carolina, how often good players turn into great coaches. Ewing was terrible. Michigan is on a downward trajectory. And Davis, after barely making the tournament last year and going on a tremendous run, returned almost his entire team and now has the dubious history of being the only coach to start the season ranked #1 and miss the NCAAT.

One great tournament run can change everything for a coach. The trick is being able to identify if that great run was an outlier or indicative of a great coach?

Anderson was a good D-2 coach for nearly 10 years before getting the FDU job. He probably wasn't looking to move, but Iona has been one of the better one-bid-league jobs for the last 20 years or so. He had to jump now while his stock was highest

Apparently Iona had interviewed Anderson when they hired Pitino, so makes sense.

Kelsey just loves the low country. He has had multiple offers, the job he did at Winthrop was amazing.

Speaking of moving, if he kept his home where he lived while at the DII school and just commuted across the Hudson River to FDU he likely won’t have to move at all since the DII school is super close to Iona’s campus.

Yep, and we just gave him a raise to 1.5 million plus incentives. Not the best money, but combine that with raising his kids in Charleston, vice some shithole in the Midwest for modestly more money, and it’s an easy choice.

He’s really got the whole city talking about the Cougars and has turned everything about CofC around from a social media and marketing perspective. Also helps having the best mid-major class in the nation coming in next year

I am very happy with Tobin Anderson’s hire at Iona. He was interviewed three years ago when he was still a D-II coach and Pitino got the job.

Pitino is an excellent coach, but he did not do for Iona what other coaches, especially Tim Cluess recently, have done. I expected RP to get us an NCAA win. He said Iona would be his last job. I never believed that. He also said we were 2-3 players away from being a top 25 team next season. I don’t know how many of those players will stay at Iona University.

My late Dad went to St. John’s undergraduate and law school and one of my sisters went to St. John’s law school. We at Iona always have held a grudge against SJU since Lou Carnesseca kept us out of the original Big East.

Pitino’s ego needed a bigger stage. We’ll see how well he does at SJU. Their success will not happen overnight and RP isn’t getting any younger. I wish them both the best and hope to play them in the NCAAs one day.

Go Gaels!!!
