3 time champion and legend in the sport.

Two long time figures gone this year.

quote:

With deep sadness, we announce that our beloved Niki has peacefully passed away with his family on Monday," his family said in a statement.
"His unique achievements as an athlete and entrepreneur are and will remain unforgettable, his tireless zest for action, his straightforwardness and his courage remain.
"A role model and a benchmark for all of us, he was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather away from the public, and he will be missed."

Just an elderly F1 fan

Great movie. And I love Daniel Bruhl (who played Lauda). Amazing what he had to endure to get back in a car after that accident and drive at the level he did.

Very sad news. He certainly was one of the greats. I think of him every time I do a lap at the Nordschleife.

There is a snake and an elephant, and they bump into each other in the jungle. They both stop and the elephant goes, 'Do you know who I am?' The snake replies - 'Yes. You have big ears and a big trunk, you are an elephant! But Mr. Elephant, do you know who I am?'

'Yes,' replied the elephant. 'You have funny skin, you have no hair and you have no ears. You are Niki Lauda...'

There was a quote form Jackie Stewart in the press today, remembering Lauda’s return after the accident.

It had only been 40 days.

quote:

To be brave enough to put on the helmet was amazing, but then he went out and qualified fifth. When he returned to the garage, he took his helmet off and I could see he was bleeding. Yet, the very next day, he raced.

One of the greats. A technician behind the wheel. I'm glad to have been able to watch him work.

ETA. Was given the last rites after his accident. He certainly didn't waste his second chance at life.

His life outside F1 was nearly as impressive. Starting and selling airlines and holding a commercial pilots license through it all just so he could fly the planes.

He's one racer I would have liked to have met.

I don't do the hero worship thing but his story and life was very impressive.

James Hunt is another.
