Watching the race at Texas motor speedway and the stands are literally empty. Yet NASCAR packs it in at the same track. So why is this? It's racing on the same exact track and the Indy cars are MUCH faster. Also the Indy racing is much more exciting....way more position changes and you get 4, sometimes 5 wide racing.

Common sense would tell you the stands should be packed if you're a racing fan, no?

unless it's the Indy 500 nobody watches indycars.

They've been a fringe series for the last 20 years.

It's a shame, since the racing tends to be competitive in IndyCar.

That's what I want to understand. Why would people flock to a NASCAR race but not go to a race with more exciting, faster racing at the same exact track?

NASCAR gets much better attendance and ratings, but those are in stark freefall too, ten years running now.

When i was younger Indy was bigger than Nascar but at some point the Indy series slopt into two different series and the driver were in one but not the other. It was strange. After that I lost interest that might have had something to do with it

I don't really like NASCAR anymore either, but I never found Indy anything close to exciting.

Indy is for a different breed/class of people, to put it frankly.

Which is OP's point.

What's the cultural appeal with NASCAR over open-wheel racing?

No, it's not.

There was an IndyCar race about five years ago from Edmonton, I think, that drew about 10% of its total TV audience from the Indianapolis market.

AOW almost died in the late 1990s until 2008 or so. Literally.

NASCAR didn't.

NASCAR has a lot more goodwill to lose.

The Indy race at Texas is pretty boring. It's almost impossible to pass, so the cars just ride along in a line at the bottom of the track. Nascar racing isn't very exciting either but at least they can race one another.

This is perfectly put by someone who has never actually been to an Indy car race.

Because if you've been you'd know this isn't true

I went to the Indy race last night. It was probably the most exciting Motorsport event I've ever been too. Going 35 mph faster than NASCAR around there, you got to go into the garages and get closer to the cars than any ofher racing series would allow.

Indy's problem is ABC/ESPN, screwed them on a contract years ago not allowing any race on another network channel, then abc bailed on all but 3 races, but kept that clause, forcing NBC to use nbcsn instead of showing races on NBC for the remaining 16 races.

In person the attendance was a lot more than it looked on tv, I'd estimate the crowd was 80,000+ Easy. Indy has a lot more upside than NASCAR right now, once their abc contract ends this year...

I've always found Indycar to be very boring. Nascar is more exciting IMO.

No.
You're thinking about sailboat racing. Motor racing fans are all pretty much the same.

Did you watch the Indy race last night? They were passing way more than NASCAR ever does there.

I've fallen asleep both times attending a NASCAR race @ Texas, the entire crowd was fully engaged the whole race last night.

Watch the last 10 laps of last year's Indycar race @ TX, it was one of the most exciting races in years.

NASCAR started as a southern sport with southern drivers. NASCAR for the longest time remained regional. The most popular drivers (Petty, Earnhardt, the Allison clan, David Pearson, and Cale Yarborough) were all from the South.
