Why don’t people do this during the basketball tournament?
Bc basketball is a different animal and people have long ago come to terms with the regular season not being very interesting. The season basically starts in March.

I think it just proves my point that this system benefits elite programs that piddled around during the regular season.
Yep. Its designed to give the most talented teams a few mulligans so they can still get in. That gives more talent in the playoffs with higher ratings.
The longer the season goes on, the cream rises.

The problem that this was meant to solve was teams like UCF having an undefeated season or a conference champ getting left out in favor of another sec team and thinking they should/could have won the National title. Now we get to see what they can really do and there’s no more doubt. Right now it’s proven that those teams couldn’t compete. Maybe some years we get some that make it all the way. This setup allows for that to be played out.

We didn’t need 12 (and soon 16) teams to allow for the occasional Cinderella. A 6 or 8 team playoff would’ve done that. It’s just always MOAR MOAR and will never stop until the sport is unrecognizable.

Or we hate seeing the sport we love continue to be degraded and devalued.

The biggest beneficiaries of this system will be the premier programs getting multiple mulligans every year. Ohio State, Penn State, and Texas all fit this. Alabama nearly got in with 3 losses.
Nailed it. This overrides any benefit to the expanded playoff argument to me. The best teams will get mulligans all to give smaller teams a pipe dream’s chance to win four in a row.

Texas, and Penn State all had disappointing regular seasons
Unless you are including a conference title game, I’d argue they had pretty good regular seasons.

SOS should determine seeding
They should invent an unbiased way to factor in SOS to rankings. Maybe like use a computer to factor in the polls……

You’re going to really hate it when it goes to 16.
This isn’t about what is best for the sport. It’s about money. Period.
Yep. 16 teams in addition to keeping the Conference Championship games.
Because money.
It's only a bad thing when you aren't the guy making the money.

TLDR: This system blows.
Yea a 4 team playoff was about perfect. Six teams max. I didn't want the expansion, thought it would be bad, and it's actually worse than I thought.

I think it’s great and the sport needs time to adjust.
They can do some tweaking. Would love to see more games on campus.
IMO more teams getting to play for a national title makes the sport healthier overall.

Oregon went 13-0, and their reward was this embarrassment.
In the Poll Era, they would be National Champs....deservedly so beating Boise State, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State in the regular season and then most likely beating Indiana.
And as the only undefeated.
But the regular season losses to do-over powers is what we've created. Congrats on those clamoring for a Playoff all these years, you frickin' ruined CFB and the importance and sanctity of every game matters and the regular season IS the frickin' Playoff!!! Thanks Herbie and ESPN, you started this shite with 2011 Alabama and your grimey greed to rig it and now the sport is unrecognizable.

Dude it’s going to 14/16. Hold your well thought out arguments. Total shitshow made for tv.

12 is fine. Just fix the seeding.

At the least, conference championship games should go away. Then rank the teams using the BCS method.

How did they have disappointing regular seasons? They lost a single game all year, both to a top-5 team.

They expanded the playoff to make more money. They made more; a lot more. That’s really where the discussion can start and end. $1.3B/yr TV deal that kicks in after next season. That’s $100M per playoff game.
