Wow...ESPN realized just covering Alabama and Clemson for 10 years ruined the sport and TANKED the ratings.

What geniuses.

I don't know what the hell they were thinking in making it a regional sport. But they turned it into NASCAR.

And Everytime Alabama is on TV, the ratings are ABSYMAL!

SEC wanted to dominate. They won and made CFB a backwater regional sport with the aid of ESPN that people don't give a frick about anymore even in some parts of the South and couldn't care less about how many MNCs are racked up in some made-up sportswriters trophy room.

Playoffs or bust was a bad business model.

College Football is becoming more and more about the money.

while that's not entirely a bad thing, just tell me one thing...

has college football ever had a perfect model for determining a champion?

I mean in some seasons even this 4 team playoff crap isn't needed. It was the same in the BCS era.

You pull the top 10 ten most watched games of each season of the last 11 years or so and Alabama is in at least half of 10 games year and year out.

No one cares about Big Ten or PAC 12 football and you can’t stand that.

in order for CFB to get better some of these programs who use to be proud and contend each year will need to sack up and play tougher.

sure, espn can be tiresome but it ain't there fault that some big name programs can't hack like they use to.

But the obsession over this has ruined the sport, importance of rivalry games, Conference champs, etc.

It was always mythical, still is mythical but turned mythology into a tangible thing... something treated as real and to be counted like Super Bowls and March Madness.

It's all make believe bullshite that had pushed aside just regular season national CFB.

11 most watched cfb regular season games in 2020

The individual program that garnered the most viewers was Alabama, which participated in six of the most watched games.

no argument there.

importance of rivalry games,

well some of the greatest rivalries aren't as important because either one side isn't cutting the mustard or it's a combination.

Example: Florida St-Miami

kind of agree but I think it's because of the covid quagmire from last year. Yeah there was football but not like it should have been. I think this just a posturing job by espn and i doubt much will change.

if anything it's just a cheap ploy by espn to gain some ratings back.

i mean i hope things get better. I pretty much just watch college and pro football now anyway.

IDGAF what they do either BUT croots do and them sharing the love a bit will only help parity and other schools who may not be doing as well (like Mine) get some attention and publicity

May not help much but it’s something

ESPN is at the top of the list on the things killing college football and the final death blow isn’t that far away.

Watching the preseason show on ESPN right now, it’s clear this article was right.

They opened the show with the Top 5 traditions.

They’re ranking the whole top 25. We’re 40 minutes in, and I don’t think they’ve mentioned the playoff. It’s refreshing to see.

The BCS era was the best in terms of the pageantry of college football.
