re: ESPN Layoffs Today: "Around 50 names you will recognize"

My buddy had a good point. Based on who is getting let go, its pretty clear ESPN is choosing to focus more on the loud/hot takes, and less on actual sports or breaking news. Those beat reporters actually have to be journalists, do research, and talk to people.
Stephen A just shows up and shouts things he thinks will be controversial.

The fact that Russillo is being diminished is the biggest news for me. He is the exact type of personality that ESPN should be hitching their wagons to. He's middle of the road on nearly everything and facts based.
May be completely wrong but IMO that just means he's going to be exclusively on radio. If they're cutting him back on radio they might as well lay him off because he doesn't do enough on TV.

That's funny. He's been on Hannity, O'Reilly Factor and considers those guys friends.

ESPN used to have a tremendous news division. The proudest moment for the network for a long time was when they were on the ground and the best source of news for the San Francisco earthquake during the World Series. That was nearly 30 years ago.
If you look at who they are laying off, it's journalists. Now personalities, not screaming heads, but people who do the actual hard work of reporting. That's because actual news gathering is both difficult nd expensive, and ESPN doesn't care about doing good journalism anymore. Their big news show became a marketing device for ESPN properties and advertisers a long time ago.
This is a sad day. The old ESPN is officially dead. All that's left is a slimy huckster wearing its suit.
Baloo's summary which appears to be spot on

The race baiting in here is bizarre and like if the Poli Board gave birth to a sports thread.

In fairness, a lot of the on air talent like Stephen A. are also under contract.
If you hate the thought of him on TV, you'll probably really hate the thought of him getting paid 10 million plus to walk and go somewhere else.

It's not that there are more white males being fired than minorities and women, it's that it is clear the approach ESPN is taking is biased. R&K didn't toe the company line, so despite being massively successful, they were pushed out, while less popular and successful people get promoted (i.e. Hill).
People like Pablo Torre have little name recognition in the scheme of things compared to some of those let go, and would rather push a political agenda than talk sports, and is falling up because he is in line with what ESPN wants (liberal minority).
It is what it is, but to pretend that ESPN isn't pushing an agenda with their firings is naive.

Looks about right. But can you blame ESPN? Other places provide the breaking news just as fast, if not faster. Let them carry the cost.
I can't remember the last time I actually got breaking news from ESPN. Their website sucks.
