I wonder if this will finally edge out poker; thought that fad of watching people play cards would end.

But I guess if ESPN thinks people want to watch others play video games, then Poker will stay and maybe add...card games like Magic and D&D and then we can watch people ride elevators in different hotels across the world on ESPN Ocho.

I just wish a game I'd actually like to watch could generate this much cash.

e-sports aren't even about sports games. so ghey.

Bring back EA College Football and I'll watch dynasty modes for years.

Poker at least has personalities, somewhat superstars like Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth. I've seen some of these e-sports guys after winning a tournament and it's just painfully awkward. I'm sure the personalities are out there, so good luck finding and cultivating them, ESPN.

I had to look it up, I first thought it was the women's football league, but this is the site to League of Legends.

LINK

I have no clue what it is.

You are dominating this thread

Fwiw I think espn will regret this but I'm sure they've done market research that makes them think otherwise

I'm a bit skeptical given how much of the LoL audience is cord-cutters, but we shall see. I think ESPN is just desperate for live events of any kind.

I think Counter Strike is a little bit more marketable than LOL. LOL players are like the sterotypical "gamer" but CS GO players actually look pretty decent and typically have personality (besides a few of course)

And CS GO is much easier to pickup. 2 teams of 5. One of the teams has to plant the bomb at one of the 2 bomb sites or eliminate the other team. The other team has to defend the sites/ eliminate the other team.

Exactly. People watch lol on twitch because they don't have cable.

Espn is greatly over exaggerating how appealing this will be to the regular sports fan.

Lol isn't even that exciting anymore to watch. Lane swaps are boring.

That is cool. Make sure he has some sort of social life outside CS.

I just can't get into the jumping camera angles for watching shooters.

The real benefit of League is that they control 90% or more of competitive matches, which means ESPN gets a bunch of content for one deal.

For CSGO or Dota they would have to chase every tournament organizer from here to Timbuktu plus get Valve on board. That a lot more slices of the pie to hand out.

Fwiw I think Dota probably has the most interesting competitive scene to watch. So much more fighting and strategy than LoL.

It can definitely get a little confusing for new viewers, but I think its a lot of easier to pickup than LOL. LOL you actually have to a decent understanding of the game while CS GO is more to the point.

The hostage stages aren't really used in competitive CSGO.

I agree. I watched a few of the deadspin "holy shite you've got to see this" videos (promoted from one of their sister sites) and I have no idea what's going on.

I've been watching a lot of games, including League of Legends on twitch for awhile now. You'd be surprised that the scene isn't riddled with fat individuals with neck beards.

Streaming for long hours and the health risks have been known for some time and a lot of the big time streamers are known for working out regularly because of the risks of their profession. They're not ripped or anything, but most of them are pretty skinny.

The big time tournaments have also been selling out like crazy.

Like it or not, it's the next big thing and the money to be made is exponential.

They need to find games that non-nerds can enjoy
