Is it illegal for the school to provide legal council if it's an NCAA issue that directly involves the school? I have no idea how the rules work here

My first thought as well. The lawyers would seem to be representing the interest of OSU as well.

I mean its illegal for a coach to pay for popeyes for a recruit I would think paying for a lawyer for the players would be a step over the line as well. Some NCAA rules are ridiculous but when you are already in trouble I think its best to air on the side of not outright paying for anything till it settles down a bit

Buckeyes in trouble yet again
I think its a little soon for this headline. The source is the Student Newspaper? I would think that they would have checked the rules before doing this, in fact I would bet on it.

With 3 losses and road trips to #16 Illinois & #11 Michigan & home games against Wisconsin & Penn State- they should have self imposed a bowl ban for this year.

NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osburn said according to NCAA rule 16.3.2, the cost of legal representation is allowed to be provided by the university in any investigation into a student-athlete's eligibility.
Might want to edit, brah.

The allegations are against the players and Ohio St - they can pay legally for those services
LSU and the bar brawl, that was totally different, LSU cannot pay for representation on a personal legal matter.
Although there has been talk that the lawyer is going after the bar and possibly LSU but I don't know how much merit that will have since he was kicked out of the bar and the last I checked Shady's and the parking lot were not on the LSU campus.

I was pretty sure this was the case but wasn't going to say shite until I got off work to check. I could only imagine the type of representation college athletes would get if they had to be the ones responsible for payment.

Since that doesn't effect eligiblity I don't think LSU can pay for consel for the players even if they try to come after the university. But I could be wrong.
Either way, Ohio State did nothing wrong here.
