It's refreshing see that the next champion will be either new or one that hasn't won anything in 40 years

Thunder as the SuperSonics 1979
Knicks in 1973
Pacers won an ABA Title in 1973
Timberwolves never won a title before

Didn't the Sonics leave their history in Seattle for the next team to pick up?

Sonics... history
My biggest takes on Sonics history:

I hated when the Sonics traded Ray Allen to Boston. Loved watching him play. With Seattle, we saw him multiple times each season. East teams only play at West teams once a year.

Shawn Kemp was a bad man, who had the jawbone of an arse.

I've not been a NBA fan since Jordan retired for the final time.

With that said, you mean to tell me that we've heard this much shite about the Knicks and they haven't won a title since the year before I was born?

Lolololol.

NY can GTFOH.

Allen played in Milwaukee before Seattle. Completely forgot that.

When Seattle gets a team back, the history returns.

Yes, but I guess we’re getting to borrow it til then? Everyone seems to credit the franchise with the Sonics stuff. Can’t say I get it lol.

No one who is a Thunder fan or roots for the Thunder acknowledges the Thunder as having an NBA title. As far as I’m concerned, the Thunder franchise doesn’t have an NBA title. The Thunder ownership occupy the records and, I assume the hardware from 1978, 1979, 1996; but is not acknowledged locally.

I wonder how it is though for other franchises?

Los Angeles Lakers claim the five MPLS titles for sure.

Do Sacramento fans claim the title won in Rochester?

Do Atlanta fans claim the title won in St. Louis?

I’d be curious how fans of teams across all sports approach this.

No one cares if a team moved. It's the city.
No one in OKC cares or cared about the Supersonics.

so..........

OKC - Never
Knicks 1973
Indiana - Never (ABA doesn't count)
Minnesota - 1954 (as the Lakers)

They have to. They don't have anything else.

There is technical answer and then logical.

Technically the contract specified if Seattle got a team back within 5 years of sale they would get all history back. This was put in to help Seattle push for a new arena. That time has passed.

Then there is logical. If Seattle ever gets a team back OKC would sell them back their history as it stood when sold. OKC legally owns it but does not push it. Nor do the fans.

But national writers are unsure how to handle team stats so include it since its the legal version but team/fans/local writers ignore it.

I meant in the national media, everyone has been running with the 1979 Sonics title or whatever year. I know people around here don’t claim that I don’t either.

The way I see it, the franchise changed ownership, cities, branding, and name. It’s a new franchise for all practical purposes. I feel like you get to keep your history if you’re just changing ownership or city, but when all of those things change, you’re not the same franchise anymore.

Yes but we don't crow about it, it's been 67 years.
