Damn, do I hate NC State. No team has brought the Terps more misery over the years than the Pack. It's just amazing. Whenever State plays the Terps, they become the 1990s Bulls. It's infuriating.

You don't understand what that expression means. I understand why people like Duke. I just disagree with it.
I'm not trying to convert you, but to fail to understand an opposition argument is just closed minded. Take Keys Open Doors. He's a huge Duke fan and we butt heads all the time. I vehemently disagree with him on just about everything. however, I do understand why he likes Duke and I comprehend his arguments in favor of Coach K. So I actually kinda like him (my best friend is actually a huge Duke fan - we rib each other mercilessly).
I find nothing to like about proud ignorance. Take the time to understand those who disagree with you. Disagreement is awesome. It is the spice of life and the heart of a message board, really. Ignorance is not. Disagree, but understand.

Calling me ignorant because I don't see your point of view? You still never gave me a valid reason just name-calling. Now that's ignorant, dense, close-minded and whatever else you called me. Hence the "pot meet kettle". You are the pot calling the kettle black when you point to another person and accuse that person of doing something that you are guilty of doing yourself. Look it up.
and I'm done...
and I'm done...

Over-exposure and hypocracy weren't valid reasons? Neither was the obnoxious fanbase, the flopping (which has become an epidimic of poor defensive technique), and the floor slapping? I also could add that Coach K is an acolyte of Bobby Knight, who I find to be one of the most repugnant human beings in sports.
You don't agree. that's perfectly fine. But once again, to say you fail to understand the hatred is just being willfully ignorant. If the shoe fits, wear it.
See, and that's the proper use of an expression. The reason the pot and kettle didn't work is that I WASN'T doing the thing I'm accusing you of. I perfectly understand your argument, you just willfully refuse to understand the opposition. I even bent over backwards to tell you that on multiple occasions in this thread. It's either that you lack reading comprehension or you are just TRYING to not understand my argument. The first explanation means you are a moron, the second means you are beneath contempt.
At no point have I argued that you should not root for Duke in this thread. In fact, I've repeated several times that you should root for whatever. But it is remarkably easy to understand why Duke is hated. Just like it's easy to understand why people hate the Yankees, the Cowboys, USC football, or the Lakers. You may root for some of those teams, you may root against some of them (I'm indifferent to most of them, though I do loathe the Yankees), but it is not hard to understand why people hate those teams either.

I think a lot of it is rooted in the fact that Duke consistently has really good white players.
I'm dead serious. Think of how many people hate guys like Redick, Paulus, Scheyer, Singler, Collins...etc. How come no one ever hates on, say, Lance Thomas, who happens to be much more emotional than a guy like Scheyer or even Singler? Why the hate on Dunleavy but no one really says anything about Duhon?
I'll flip the script. Many Duke fans HATE Hansborough, but really don't have much to say about Lawson or Ellington.
I think white basketball fans tend to polarize white basketball players...they either love them or really really hate them. I'm really not sure why.
On the other hand, most black basketball fans usually like white basketball players. What's up with this reverse racism?
***Note that all of the above is based solely on personal observation as a white basketball player for 20 years at every level from Biddy to NCAA D1 and is not rooted in any statistical information, so if you ask for a link, kindly kiss my arse***

Stewie, that is a very interesting point, had to sit down and think about that a bit.
One point to further your argument would be that Henderson is not despised by the Carolina group (to my knowledge) to the level that Hurley, Wojo, Paulus, etc are. His foul on Hansbrough would seemingly make him public enemy number one.
I am a Duke fan (support Duke basketball as my second favorite collegiate entity behind UGA), and upon reflection have never really heard Grant Hill, Shane Battier (who took more "charges" than anyone), or even an easy target like Alaa Abdelnaby spoken of with the vitriol of Wojo.
Although, one could say names like Larry Bird, Keith Van Horn, or a Gerry McNamera that didnt really polarize anyone.
Interesting theory.

I think it's an interesting theory, though I do think Shane Battier is just as loathed as many of the big white Duke players. OK, maybe not as much as Wojo or Reddick, who really took it to a whole other level.
But I will say that Grant Hill is not nearly as hated as Laettner.
I do think there could be a cycle at work. Because I don't really think Duke has any more white players than anyone else, really, it just seems they are identified as a "white" team. But white guys identify with the team anyway, building resentment among other white people who hate them for being the standard bearers of The Great White Hope. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I think perception plays a bigger role than actually having tons of white players. But I do think it plays a role. Just like people dogged on Memphis last year for being too black without coming out and saying it, people dog on Duke for being too white.

I can definitely understand the hate for Duke. In general, successful teams are hated, whether we are talking about the 1980s Boston Celtics, Notre Dame until the Bob Davie/Ty Willingham/Charlie Weis era, the Dallas Cowboys, or the New York Yankees. The Patriots under Belicheck are a most recent example.
Opposing fans also get annoyed with the media constantly praising dominant teams and their head coaches. I am sure Brent Musberger has turned the entire nation against Pete Carroll
But not all successful teams are hated. I was too young to really understand Showtime, but I don't think that Magic and the Lakers were hated as much as the Celtics. Even though Jordan is an a-hole (and extremely successful), the Chicago Bulls were always popular, and UNC's basketball team has never been hated by too many fans, excluding students at Wake, Duke, Maryland, and NC State.

I never understood the hatred for Paulus. Seems like everyone is jealous. How many athletes were Army All Americans in football AND McDonalds All Americans in basketball? I believe the answer in 0. I could be mistaken though.
Why hate people you dont even know? Stupidity.
The video is funny though.

Obviously the #1 factor in hatred is a team being successful. If a team is hated, it is almost certainly a good team (Notre Dame football is sort of an exception, though they USED to be good and are still treated like they are).
I also think its odd how Maryland doesn't really fit in the old 8-team ACC, which breeds a cerain kind of obnoxious fanbase. First, there's the powerbase in Carolina, but it's even in the make-up of the student body. ACC schools were either private (Wake, Duke), technical schools (Clemson, State, GT), or "public ivy" (UNC, UVa). Then there's this rowdy public school in the mix (Maryland). The different demographics is bound to breed hatred, and also why most ACC schools complain about Maryland's lack of class.

And that's where I think Stewie's theory becomes relevant. When Duke had Elton Brand, Will Avery, Maggette, and Trajan Langdon as the stars of the team, opposing teams were never that intense even though that team was incredibly successful.
The hate against JJ Redick was pretty much unparalleled, and he didn't even really do anything. Everyone talks about what a douchebag he is, but can someone give me an example of what he has done or something that he said during his time at Duke? The only good examples I have ever seen other than his poetry
come from students at Duke during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 school years. And even those things aren't really a big deal.
I think that the Duke fans' hatred of Hansbrough is a great example as well. Lawson is a much bigger target. He is a moron, has been arrested, and was not well-liked by teammates for at least his first two years, but Duke fans never really say anything about him.

If it had existed in the 1990s, Ronald Curry would have been an Army All-American for sure, but I understand your point. It's definitely a rare combination.
Honestly, Paulus should have stuck with football.
