How many of you post 2006 Drew Brees fans actually were old enough to watch Roger Staubach play? When Staubach played he was hit on every play with no penalties and his receivers were not only grabbed down field, they were grabbed at the line of scrimmage! There was no 5 yards of no touching them. This sweetie passing that Brees does is a joke compared to pre-1994 rules.

Brady, Montana, Graham, and Unitas were the only unanimous choices.

I mean, this thread is about just such a list. And it has you pretty worked up.

If you put Brees in the same era as Staubach he’d be burned alive for assumed witch craft

Why do people act like he actually drug a shite team to Super Bowls?

Possibly because he had absolutely no big names on offense to play with. If you take a look at that 1989 AFC Championship team of the Broncos, you will see WR names like Mark Jackson, Vance Johnson, and Chris Woods. Whereas the 49ers team they went up against in the Super Bowl had guys named Jerry Rice, John Taylor, and Brent Jones. And that's to say nothing of Roger Craig, Montana's reliable RB, who was nasty catching passes coming out of the backfield.

Top 10 is not fantasy football. His stats are great. But he's never been considered the best QB of his era. Not a single season.

At the time of his retirement, Staubach was 19th all-time in passing yards and 23rd in passing TDs. Brees will be #1 or #2 all-time in both lists when he retires. At the time of his retirement, Staubach was #6 all-time in completion percentage which is tremendous. Brees is #1 all-time in completion percentage. Staubach made the Pro Bowl six times. Brees has made 13 Pro Bowls. What argument does Staubach have over Brees except ringz?

Besides missing four years in his twenties when he was in the Navy?

Young people forget Brees is playing in the easiest time for an NFL QB in history.

In the 70's and 80's it was normal for the entire defense to try to knock the QB's head off.

Now it's a penalty if a defensive player hurts the QB's feelings and can't even think about laying out a receiver.

Plus about 70% of the plays called were running plays up until Bill Walsh and Joe Montana came along. Also seasons were 14 games long instead of 16 so stats were going to be shrunk some even if you could compare apples to apples here.

What a dumbass. Especially considering what he said last season.

quote:

Jason Whitlock: Drew Brees is the best QB on the best team in the NFL. He's the clear favorite to win MVP this season, not Patrick Mahomes or Todd Gurley.

Regardless, Brees can only do what he can do. He has outplayed everyone ever without extraordinary talent. He has had some good players but it’s not like this team was overloaded with talent. Every time he breaks a record the sports media is quick to call him the goat then the next week they are back to sucking off someone with inferior stats.

We’re gonna win a super bowl this year behind Drew’s arm and he’ll immediately be considered top 3 all time

I’ll be straight up honest. I’ll slap the frick out of someone that tries to tell me brees isn’t a top 5 much less top 10 qb all time. It is not a defensible position and definitely means you aint man enough to respond.

He's top ten but he isn't top five. Brady, Montana, Manning, Elway, and Unitas are the top five. It's not all about stats especially considering the differences in rules, coaching philosophy, field conditions and maintenance, nutrition, surgical procedures and physical rehabilitation, exercise science, and the size and speed of opposing defenses from era to era. I would put it one third stats, one third championships, and one third eye test.

I’m not entirely convinced that this is the “easiest” time to be a QB in the NFL.

These days, there’s a lot more riding on the QB for the team to be successful. A NFL team without a great/very good QB is dead on the launch pad in this era. Offenses and defenses in this era are more complex than ever before and QBs do not have the luxury of dominant running games to bail out their ineffectiveness.

I get the arguments about more physical play in earlier eras, and how rules favor passing offenses now. But these days, you have to have the arm, the brain, and the leadership... the complete package... more than any other era before.

I’m from the “old” era. That’s the kind of football I actually prefer. But the game requires much more out of QBs now than it used to. I think many are overlooking that fact. The primary talent of a NFL QB is throwing the ball. The modern QB throws the ball better and more often than QB’s of previous eras. That is not a statement that detracts from the modern QB. Rather, it elevates the importance of the modern QB.

I mean it's pretty true though. It's always been Manning and Brady. Then Rodgers went insane for a few years and it was Manning, Brady, Rodgers.

How so? Talking sports and debating does not mean one is worked up. In none of my posts did I get worked up. Nice try though.
