Did not have sound on when he got drafted.

He said something about the service being deferred...

He will serve in selective reserve status.

They had a guy a few years back whose assignments were scheduled around the NFL.
They want him in the league for PR.

Uh. It’s 5 years active and 3 years reserves.

Napoleon McCallum, the Navy screwed him over and assigned him to a ship in the Indian Ocean. Missed a couple seasons right after he played his rookie season.

yes they did, he missed the '87, '88, and '89 seasons

The Navy assigned McCallum in 1987 to USS California (CGN-36), home ported in Alameda, California and at that time sailing in the Indian Ocean, preventing him from returning to the NFL; McCallum believed that the Navy did so because of the attention he received from playing for the Raiders.
After serving his duty with the Navy until 1990, McCallum rejoined the Raiders.

You realize, at the time, the Navy was under no obligation to let him play that rookie year? It was public pressure and political factors that got them to waive their policy. When he enrolled at Annapolis he knew he had a multi-year commitment.

Ask this guy
Robinson served before he joined the NBA

2 years and in the reserves and I think as a result they made it even easier to defer

Robinson didn't have to serve a day because he was medically disqualified due to height restrictions. He chose to serve in a limited capacity.
During Trumps first term Trump issued an Executive Order allowing Service Academy athletes to chase professional athletic careers if drafted. Biden struck that EO down. I'm guessing Trump reinstated it.

Correct. He was within height limits when he enrolled and too tall by the time he graduated.
