Does Pete Carroll stay at USC if they never come under NCAA investigation?

And if so, do they continue their run into the 2010s? Everyone looks at that '09 finish with 9 wins and 4 losses as a sign that USC was on its way down, but people seem to forget that Carroll (probably) had given up and was looking for a way out due to the imminent NCAA sanctions that were to be handed down.

If USC never comes under scrutiny, do you think it possible Carroll keeps it going at a high level?

He would've left, eventually. People forget that he left way before anyone knew what the punishment would be. No one, not even the biggest SC haters, believed the NCAA would hammer us the way they did.

i think he was looking for the next challenge

he probably understood that re-creating 2003-2005 was impossible so the next realistic challenge was going back to the NFL

which he did

and where he dominated for a good bit

A better question is, does he come back and coach College again?

Isn’t he the same age as Saban?

I think he did the ole Ron Meyer cavalry is coming exit, but I dont think he had any idea SC would get pounded the way they did. I dont think anyone did.

It is pretty cool though that he has had such success in the NFL, especially after failing the first time around.

Thats a bit overblown. He was 33-31 with 2 playoffs in 4 years. Is that really failing?

Seattle offered him a shitload of money to be the HC and GM. I don't think he turns that down regardless of the circumstances at USC.

What run? They hadn't won a title in 5 years. The whole "dynasty" was 1.5 titles and the only reason they "won" in 2004 is because they didn't have to play Auburn.

This run (AP finishes):

2002: #4
2003: #1
2004: #1
2005: #2
2006: #4
2007: #3
2008: #3

That's seven straight Top Five finishes right there to go along with two national championships. They were also champions of their conference in each of those seven seasons. If that isn't considered a run then I don't know what is.

No, he was running a pro program there, roids, cash payments, etc.

It was always going to come crumbling down, he stayed as long as NCAA would allow him. He was full aware of when they were going to drop the hammer, so he bolted.

I think so, he’s always had that NFL itch so after having so much success at the collegeiate level it makes sense that he wanted to conquer pro as well. Which he did in short order

They got blasted by Oregon when they were the no.5 team in the country. I think Pete was interested in the NFL by that point anyway

The 2006 game vs Oregon State was a doozie.

He actually said (with a straight face) that he would've stayed had he known about the hammer being dropped.

The UCLA game later that season.
